I just obtained a NEC multisync 5FG monitor made in March 1992. It is
in almost like brand new condition. However, since it was in an office it
must of been on 24 hrs a day. Therefore the only problem with it is the
display which has lost its crispness. The picture especially when reading
text is blurry and fuzzy especially around the edges. It is such a beautiful
monitor I would hate to discard it. What is the exact cause of this
blurring? Would it be worth repairing? Could it ever be restored to 100% of
its former self? How much could I expect a repair like this to cost?

Thank you,
Joseph Bongiovanni

Most all monitors, if you open them up, have in the back a 'focus'
thingy. Used for changing the focus.

Weak CRT. Emission poor. You can try restoring it with a Sencore or
Beltron restorer which could help. Sometimes restoring is good for a
month, sometimes for a year or more. Depends on original quality of the
tube and however much cathode material is left.

There are 2 (probably) holes on the left side. At least one if focus. Use
a long narrow flat blade (insulated) screwdriver.

Try adjusting the focus before condeming it to the scrap heap!

Thanks so much to everyone who responded. I'm sorry for not including
that information. I should have been more concise. Yes, I did adjust the
focus on the left side of the monitor. Just an update though, for the last
three days I have been degaussing the monitor. Since it had never been
turned off in five years I doubt it had ever been degaussed even manually.
While it was no miracle cure it has brought some sharpness back to several
areas of the display. While the edges aren't as blurry the clarity still
leaves alot to be desired.

Thanks Again,
Joseph Bongiovanni

Er, if you haven't turned it off in 5 years, the tube probably needs a
rejuvination, which will give it a year or more of life, otherwise,
I'm willing to bet it's reached the end of it's service life. My
rule of thumb is, if you're not staring at it, turn it off, screen
savers don't work. I've got a nice Mag DX15F sitting here if you're
in the market. :)
