Sony VCR error code

I've heard of this, but until now, I've never run into it:
Here's a Sony SLV-920HF that might play for half an hour, then will
instantly stop, with no warning. The clock display reads:
L-30-01 .

From the FAQs,
http://www.paranoia.com/~filipg/HTML/REPAIR/F_vcr_repair.html ,
this would seem to indicate either a capstan motor problem (30) or
"abnormal take-up reel rotation" (01) - I'm not quite sure how to
interpret what's written.

Attempting to play the tape again results in playing properly for
several seconds, then again immediately going to stop with no warning
and displaying the same error code. A visual inspection shows that
the capstan motor shaft is turning, right up to the moment of
shutdown. It seems that this only happens when playing a videotape;
using a ViewThru "skeleton" does not provoke the failure.
Any thoughts?

Is the tape counter incrementing up until the end or does it stop a few
seconds before the VCR aborts?

Error code 01 corresponds to no reel sensor information from sensor PH2.
The definitive test for either reel sensor is to monitor the output of the
sensor (pin #4) with a scope. The sensor's supply is +5v and a good one
will swing from 4 or 5 volts to almost 0 volts. If the sensor does not
swing to 0 volts (may be 1 volt instead), then it is faulty. If it does
swing to 0, look elsewhere for problems such as capstan motor, etc.

Try cleaning the optical sensors underneath the tape reels.
It sounds like the system thinks that the reel has stopped moving
and goes to error condition.
Sometimes a piece of dirt/dust can get into the optical sensors under the
tape reels and cause this.
Also clean any dust from the beg/eot sensors and the ir-led itself.
The led sits there in the center of the tape compartment, looks like
a little beacon. And the sensors sit on either side of the tape
usually they have black plastic holes, to prevent outside light from
affecting them. You will have to probably remove the nylon keeper
washers from the top of each reel to allow removing them, so that you can
clean the reel pulse sensors underneath.

I recall that some models of defective VCR's such as emerson
had to have modifications or component changes to the reel pulse
system because at the end of a tape it would occasionally shutdown, due to
lack of pulses. A design flaw..
