My win98 machine locks up at the logo screen. The bar across the bottom
scrolls then stops and just looks at me... any suggestions?

press escape when you see the win98 screen pop up.. it might be hiding
some interesting driver information behind it.

Boot to DOS, and load msdos.sys into an editor...you may need to
remove the hidden and read-only attributes. To the [Options] section,
add the line

Logo=0

...that's a zero, not the letter O...this will either allow Windows to
boot, or it will allow you to see what is loading when it hangs.

After you hear the first beep, start pressing F8. If I remember
correctly this is the emergency startup. You then will get a choice
menu.

Check to see if the cache is setup to be controled by windows. You
must go through the properties for mycomputer to get to that area.

The next thing you can do is boot on your emergency startup disk, and
see how much hard disk space is available. If you have less than
about 150 mbytes free (depending on how many applications are being
delt with on bootup), your cache may be too small, thus hanging the
system.

The easiest resolve to this if you have everything backed up, is to
reformat the drive, and reinstall Windows. I have done my system more
than I can remember...

....Or simply press ESC right after the splash screen disappears. This much
easier and allows you to see the real mode drivers loading. You can also
press F5 as soon as the operating system starts to boot for step-by-step
confirmation of each loading item.

Correction: after the splash screen appears - NOT disappears, and I think
it's F8 you need to press.

better to hit F8 when it says, "loading windows98". Then do step by step and
see where it hangs.
Also have a look at, "bootlog.txt".You may find a driver causing a problem.

PS-That approach just worked for a system that I was putting
together...the logo screen apparently can have some interrupt problems
with some configurations, and did with the one I was working with. The
other sugestions in this thread are all useful. I have been running
Windows from 3.10, 3.11, 95 beta, 95, 95a, 95b, and 98, and have
installed one over the other, and have moved them from partition to
partition, and have not had to do a reformat/clean reinstall yet.
