My Epson Sylus Color 670 no longer wants to communicate to
my computer. It's not the cable - that performed flawlessly in
another system. I really don't think it's the computer, but I
haven't definitively ruled it out.
When I turn the printer on, it runs through some stuff,
including both horizontal and vertical drive exercises. These
work. I have tried to print a test page, and nothing happens.
Well, the lights flash as if the controller thought that it was
printing a test page, but it never even takes in the paper.
Now, my color cartridge is empty, but I've been successfully
printing b/w this way for several months now.
I've taken the thing apart and found no obvious shorts,
opens or burn marks. The controller (Epson C301MAIN, Assy
2033172 00) might be the same as that found in other Epson
printers.
I suspect the best thing to do is throw it out and get a new
one, but shouldn't they last more than two years? I've barely
used it. Brand new it cost me $90, but I could probably get one
for about $50 if I was lucky.
Thanks.

Before throwing it away try taking out both the
cartridges and putting them back in again .
Chris
Start ruling it out, anything can be.
But you mention after some lines that you try to print and the light blinks,
so the printer is receiving what you send, right?
Make sure you installed the proper drivers. Why not try to uninstall them
and then reinstall.

In some Epsons there are two ways to print an injector test, one is from the
software and the other is from the printer buttons. I don't know if this
applies to your particular printer, check the manual. You could try to print
that test from the printer buttons and see if it takes paper, so you can
rule out software, PC and cable.

Well, then the printer is communicating with the PC, right?
The problem seems inside the printer.

Sam,
Epson has simple error status via software or LEDs. If the red LED on
either black or color ink "droplets" symbols flashing, it thinking ink
is OUT. Press and hold the ink black/color symbol button for few
seconds till printer starts, if it present you ink tanks, unlatch,
take one out and put back in. Press same button again. Wait for it
to complete it's purge cycle.
That epson keep track of ink consumpation and details kept in memory
backed by CR2032 battery in all epson printer. Estimating ink used is
always wrong.
Then try test print. Either from windows or printer itself. Power
off press and hold paper advance button I think while turning printer
on. Wait for it to run. It will then print self-test paper.
I repair many of those epsons. They're basically disposeable compared
to canon and HP. Printhead is part of printer itself. 100 dollar
part and always need forced unclogging with length of hobby fuel
tubing and 10cc injector barrel, whole thing filled with windex hot
water and inject forcefully in through that pirecing pin remember to
hold that hose's end on that pin or else spray all over, ruining that
small vertical circuit board for that printhead, then flush with hot
water from tap. Also rinse the sealing/park station under hot water.
Don't scrub, too delicate, clean that wiper as well. Reassemble, do
the cleaning cycle 2 times.
Success rate is 40% on epsons. Canon and HP 100%. I prefer HP for
reliablity and cartridges is easier to unclog, can be refilled.
Canon carts very small capacity, expensive to replace duds or
uncloggables and mainboards tend to blow out.
Ribbon cable is not the problem.
Cheers,
Wizard

I usually use a b/w laser printer, and keep my Epson in the closet. It only
comes out when I need a color print for something. And it ususally takes me
a while to get it functioning properly. My owner's manual details a number
of tests, including a way to print a test page without having the printer
hooked up to the computer at all -- an obvious way to help isolate the
fault. I don't know whether the 670 has this capability.
Another bug that's stumped me on a couple of occasions is that the driver
software supplied with the printer doesn't work with newer computer OS, so
I've had to download driver updaters from the Epson website. I also need to
reset certain parameters in my computer's control panels when switching
printers.

Had this problem with a 640 and put it aside until I had a chance to look at
it.
A couple of days later I plugged it in and it worked OK. Maybe the CPU threw a
wobble.
