I have a Sony SLV-585HF VCR that is about 3 years old. The problem I am
experiencing is that after viewing a tape (any and all tapes) for about an hour
or so, the deck begins to "skip" on a cyclic basis. By skip, I mean that the
sound and picture on the TV freezes momentarily, and then resumes normally.
The period of the cycle is initially quite long (about 30 seconds or so) and
progressively gets to the point where it occurs every 3 to 5 seconds (or until
I can't stand to watch anymore). This only occurs when playing tapes, and only
after extended (1 hour or so) continuous use.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Rick

I had the same thing happen to my SLV-585HF. The problem was a faulty
tape drive motor. Once the unit warmed up, the motor would have a "sticky"
place in it. It caused all sorts of tracking problems.

FYI, this seems to be a common problem with the sony VHS vcr's. It cost
me $125 to have the unit repaired by a sony authorized service center.

Good luck,

You have a defective capstan motor. It loses torque after tape is played
for about an hour. You have to replace the capstan motor. Sony part # is
8-835-394-11. If I remember correctly the cost is around $50.

Sony SLV-585HF is very similar to SLV-535 the Malaysian model. I have in the
field of repairing Sony Video many years and I found the sympton description
is very common in our country.

The reason for momentarily pause in you playback is because the capstain motor
is too hot. When the captain motor is cold its spind at constant speed. As it
get warmer and warmer the speed will momentarily pause.

It's the design problem and its the major problem in our field repair our here
in Malaysia.

In fact you're not that bad cause your video is quite sometimes already. Some
of my customer they bought for only a few months and the capstain is not
spining at all.

Some of the fault is speed is getting slower and slower and tracking line on
the screen is getting more and more.

Some of the fault is like what you describe in your fault.

Hope you could fix it

Thank you and have a nice day. If you want to post to me personally email this
