Those Craig tv's are really terrible. We got it as a gift, a couple years
ago, and it is one of the worst products I have ever seen. Anyone else
had a similar experience?
Thanks, Kevin

Everything Craig makes is junk, in my opinion. Craig manufacturers products
designed for what is called the "low end" market - low prices, with generally
fake cosmetics on the exterior to make the unit appear to look like a higher
priced competitor. The inside is junk. A customer brought me a Craig
combination CD player/receiver/tape deck recently. It had what appeared
to be a 6-band equalizer - 6 slide pots on the face of the unit. Closer
inspection revealed that it actually was a 3-band EQ - the sliders were
connected mechanically in pairs so that if you pushed up one fader, the
one next to it followed along. There actually were only 3 pots inside,
and 3 associated EQ filters.
Craig is designed for those folks on a limited budget who want consumer
electronics. They will sell a unit like I described above for about
$99 and it will last on average about 12-18 months. Then either the
power transformer primary opens (fusible link in the transformer in lieu
of a fuse), the junky cassette mechanism is shot, or the even junkier CD
transport is gone, not to mention the blown undersized speakers or the
shot output IC. The poor customer takes it to a repair shop, who
estimates the cost of repair at least 50%-60% of the new price of the unit.
So the customer goes out and buys another one, because he can't afford
the more expensive quality unit. And the cycle starts over.
Good luck talking to Craig. Remember, they don't care. They know their
equipment is junk - it's designed that way.
In fairness, there are other companies around which have the same philosophy.
The names Funai, Daewoo, Sparkomatic, SoundDesign come to mind, as well as
others. And more of the "quality" brand names are headed in that direction.
RCA and GE televisions have been very troublesome for years; now the RCA/GE
consumer electronics brand name (Thomson Consumer Electronics) has been
purchased by Daewoo. I could go on and on, but I'll get off of my soapbox
now.
