Can anyone give me a clue as to what these codes mean, and where to
start troubleshooting? Done most of the obvious- no blown fuse, tape
path clear, etc.
Tried asking a couple of Sony service centers for info, but they
wouldn't help. Said bring it in for a minimum $100 looksee. I'd like to
avoid that if I could....

as well as the group- I *know* I get less than half the postings that
occur here.
Thanks!

Don't know if those error codes apply to your model, however.

The centre part tells which mode the machine was in when the fault occured
(the "minutes" part). It is the last part of the code that is important
(the "seconds" part).
The code is as follows
00 No fault
01 Take up reel not rotating
02 Supply reel not rotating
03 No drum rotation
04 Clockwise rotation of capstan motor incorrect
05 Anticlockwise rotation of capstan motor incorrect
06 Cassette loading incorrect
07 Cassette loading incorrect
Your code of 04 means that either the capstan motor is not rotating
because of some mechanical problem. Alternatively if the motor is turning
OK then it is possible that the micro thinks that it is not for some reason.
Good luck
John

Do you have a complete list of the mode codes? (For the FAQ)
Thanks.

No ideawhere to get one in the States I`m afraid. I`m in UK. I doubt you
would get a new one even if you were prepared to pay the price. I had his
problem with a Sony back in the summer and ended up scrapping the machine as
uneconomic.
All the best
