Our other set works fine so it is not a cable problem. I also checked
connections from the set to the street.
If I turn the set on and off several times it will eventually come on
fine. Also, when it has been running we occasionally get a loss of
signal the lasts for only a small fraction of a second - almost
unnoticable. . Any ideas?
This sounds like a fault in the IF or Tuner module. Sometimes it is a
bad solder connection inside these modules. This is tricky to find
because it is all surface mount components and uses very high
frequencies. You also would need a special jig to work in these
modules activly.
I mostly just replace the defective module. The time in labour costs
can exceed the price of the module. I do some tests to determine
which module is bad, and then replace it. You would have to have a
qualified TV service tech with the proper test gear do this for you.

It would have been helpful if you would have included a model number
but from your description I'd say you should remove the tuner and go over
the solder connections inside it. These late model Sony tuners are well
known for bad solder work. (all ground connections)

Just did one today, about 8 years old...did the tuner, IF, and lots of
bad connections on the main board, including the 30V line to the
tuner...the set works fine now, and that was my goal.
