I recently took my 2 1/2 year-old JVC Hi-fi VCR in for service because of the
appearance of horizontal white lines on playback of almost any tape. These
lines would appear seemingly randomly on the picture, and would stretch
anywhere from 1/3 of the way to the full width of the picture, and would last
anywhere from a few seconds to almost indefinitely. The latter kind could be
temporarily cured via full removal and reentry of the tape (or sometimes by
performing a reverse search for a few seconds), but then lines would reappear
after a few minutes (or even seconds) of playback.

The reason I'm posting is that the repair shop has admitted they are stumped.
The technician told me he had once heard of similar problems on JVC VCRs and
was attempting to contact JVC, but had never personally seen anything like it.
He apparently tried to call JVC last week; as of this morning he still hadn't
heard back.

The tech's comments stirred up a faint memory from something I read a couple of
years ago--an infamous JVC VCR "white streak" problem. Were any Hi-Fi units
affected by this problem, or was it confined to SVHS machines (I forget)? Do
the symptoms I decribed above ring any bells? What is the solution (if indeed
my machine contracted this dread disease)? Any other ideas I could pass on the
tech?

I would appreciate any reponses very much! Thanks in advance!

common problem

this should be a fix for it:

there is a capacitor (there is only one) on the drum (lower cylinder) drive PCB,
change it.

Hi Dirk, you have the classic JVC problem, but it's easy to repair.
First, have your tech check the small electrolytic capacitor on the
drum motor board, I believe it's a 3.3uF 50V surface mount cap, it is
the onlt electrolytic on the board. Have him replace it, those are
known to go bad and cause the problems you are experiencing, that can
be replace with a standard electrolytic.

Second, and more sinister, (I've seen this happen), have your tech
check the brass pins that hold the tape posts in place, usually the
left one falls out, leaving the tape post to float around on it's
track. He can put it back in with a dab of super glue. What is
sinister about this problem, as if it is not repaired soon, the loose
post will eventually hit the spinning drum, trashing the video heads.

I've had to replace heads on this particular unit because the post hit
the drum, my advice is not to use the machine at all until it is
checked out. Good luck Dirk and hope this helps!:)

Joe

P.S.>Both problems are very easy to repair, let's hope the post didn't
loosen up and hit the drum!

Recently had identical problem with a Panasonic NVHD100B Hi Fi VCR. I
also had noise streaks, randomly occurring at 1/3 from bottom of the
screen. The problems were caused by the sprung-loaded ground strip
which connects the top of the drum assembly to the VCR chassis. A
replacement cured all noise streaks.

All the best, Steve Robinson

This is a common problem ... see a Web page I put up regarding it:

I own such a machine, the fault is in the design in the Video Head assembly.
The Video Head is made of two basic parts sandwiched together. The two halves
are joined electrically via Solderless connections, this is where the problem
is. If the connections are not perfectly clean they will introduce noise in
the video, sometimes intermittently with varying temperatures.

Solution:

Use a Flat-Tip "Jewelers Screwdriver" - Wiggle each of the Plastic Contact
Keepers from the topside of the Video Drum, this will polish the connections.
Take care and don’t twist/screw these Keepers, gentle repeated wiggles will do,
otherwise they may break.
