A few weeks ago I purchased a non-functional Sony Mavigraph UP-5000
video printer, I soon found that the source of the problem is the power
supply. I've checked the output voltages and found that I'm getting
under 1 volt, the cooling fan which requires 12V (and has its own
power connector) is getting about 4.5 volts. When switched on there is
a high pitched whine coming from the power supply, the pitch of the
whine seems to change and eventually the power supply will produce
enough voltage to spin the cooling fan, but that about it. The solder
side of the PCB seems to have a white/yellowish substance lightly
covering it, at first I thought that one of the capacitors leaked, and I
preceded to remove & inspect all the major caps on the PCB, but none of
them seemed to be leaking or bloated.
I was wondering if anyone had/has any experience with the Sony Mavigraph
UP-5000 video printer, and could give me an idea about the source of the
problem and what I should check for? Any and all help would be greatly
appreciated, if you would like to send me email please send it to the
