I am trying to diagnose my parents' Hitachi FX624 VCR (circa late '99)
which recently began eating tapes upon eject. I know the usual
process for a tape eater is to replace idler tires and rubber bands
but this particular model seems to have neither; the mechanism is
different from any I've come across. I don't see any obvious broken
gears and the problem is somewhat intermittent, but increasing. If
anyone familiar with this model can give me any ideas about why the
tape would not fully retract into the shell during the stop-eject
sequence I would appreciate it.

Also, is there a simple way to bypass the light sensor in this unit?
It is putting the VCR into a safe rewind mode as soon as I remove the
cover -- I've been able to block one side of the mechanism and fool
the sensor but it's hard to work that way.

Thanks for any help. \

JGM:
I have an article on how to make a dummy VHS cassette that allows you to
diagnose the mechanism without having an actual tape in the machine. E-mail
me or post again if you would like a copy.

When working on these, I dim the lights a bit or not have them
shining in the machine at the angle to make the sensors wrongly
work.

You most likely have a warn idler, belts, and idler tire. Try these
to start with. It is sometimes hard to tell by eye, unless you've
worked with a lot of these parts. The idler wheel assy is the
biggest problem in these. We generaly change the complete kit to
make sure that the machine will be good for a while.

JGM,
If this VCR is similar to one I worked on with a similar problem (Hitachi
VT-FX613A), I had to change the following parts:

KX11442 Pulley/Clutch
KX11522 Belt (This was a toothed belt if I remember correctly)
KF10551 Gear

Hope this helps

I suspect your problem is a clutch assembly that permits slippage (too much
when worn) when the reel is driven during play, and viewable searches. I
can't tell you the price, but it is a fix. Another possibility is to replace
the felts in the clutch. Much cheaper, but more time. If your fixing this
for money, I'd go for the clutch.

Good Luck!
