Hello, I'm considering building a GAL programmer featured in the May 1994
issue of Electronics Now mag. However, I can't locate the OPAL Jr.
software mentioned in the article anywhere on the net. Anyone know where
you can still download this? Does National have a BBS with the software
still on it?

Thanks for any help

Dave

National quit having anything to do with OPAL when they quit
making PAL's. I'll put the OPAL stuff in some e-mail to you as soon as I
get back from church. If there's a big demand, I could put it up on my
web page for public consumption.

Jim,
Thanks a bunch, but it looks like I might not need you to e-mail
me the OPAL stuff afterall. Someone who replied to my post with an e-mail
message gave me an ftp site with OPAL Jr. V2.1 still on it. The ftp site
address is:

ftp ftp.armory.com/pub/user/rstevew/GAL/opaljr21.zip

Don't waste your time and money on that antiquated crap.

Do this:

https://hackaday.com/2021/04/15/programming-pals-in-2021/

Then check this out:

https://www.jameco.com/z/TL866II-Plus-Jameco-ValuePro-USB-High-Performance-Programmer_2297823.html

and all the ICs it handles:

http://autoelectric.cn/MiniPro/TL866II_List.txt

- a lot more bang for the buck.

Those DIY programmers may not even be spec for all the GALs- means you get a quirky chip.

If you build a system using a significant number of them, you better think about bringing out a representative sample of signal on header connectors to be captured by a logic analyzer for debug, or even a self-diagnostic.

Depending on your goals, you can likely find a moth-eaten
copy of CUPL, ABEL or PALASM if you looked hard enough...

(Or, something more "current")
