or Network Address Translation.

A firewall isn't a simple circuit. The logic is usually in the
million gate range, with plenty of SRAM. I seriously doubt that
anyone actually draws a schematic. The chips would be custom
ASICs, and described using a hardware description language such
as Verilog or VHDL. The actual logic would be synthesized.
It's possible to create a software firewall using a PC or othre
genral purpose machine with 2 network cards. If you want to do it
yourself, that's probably the way to go.

The functionality of a firewall is mostly software (or "firmware")
The hardware is little more than input and output network ports with a
computer in the middle.
A "hardwired" firewall would be out of date before you could design and
build it!
Most people who build their own firewalls use an old PC and specialized
software (which is free).
A firewall is one of those things that has become too complex to implement
in hardware. There are many other examples of such things in modern society.
