If you own a gun, the person it is most likely to kill is you (by suicide) so no sane person would expose themselves to that risk in the hope of being able to protect themselves from some much less likely risk.

They are actually aiming at the goal the goalee is there to protect, but they mostly don't get the time to hit the ball into the gap between the goalee and the goal. It's not a position that nervous people like.

There was a Texas case where a mother shot her son, but got off on the grounds that she though that he was her estranged husband. Stupid people running around waving loaded guns have killed a lot of innocent bystanders, and you do seem to be remarkably stupid.

As goalee, I'm allowed to kick a hockey ball. Every other position in fleld hockey has to hit the relatively small, hard ball with a stick.
A good hit can get it going at around 100 mph, and some forwards can manage that in a shot on goal. Goalees normally wear a helmet, a chest protector, and some kind of crotch protection as well as pads that cover the shins and most of the thigh. I have played kicking back when I haven't been able to get hold of the protective gear, but it plays hell with player insurance.
Sworn officers do commit quite a lot of crimes - they are dealing with real criminals, and have more opportunity for human error than most.
Why bother? Killing somebody by mistake isn't necessarily a crime. Like I said, the Texas lady who shot her son got off on the defense that she thought that it was her estranged husband. The people are just as dead, even if it was an honest mistake, and they would have been much less likely to end up dead if the person who confronted them had threatened them with something less reliably lethal than a gun.
