Does anyone have Winline? It is a plotter driver for some of the older HP,
etc., plotters. If so, what version?
Looking to buy.
Thank you.

Don't know if it would be helpful, but I've been developing an
"open-source" emulator program for the HP7470A. It will read an HP-GL/2
data file (or GPIB input directly from a National Instruments adapter)
and display or print it on any Windows-compatible printer. It's a
little rough (OK, pretty damned rough) around the edges but I'm making
improvements to it fairly regularly.
The current version can be is at

always be found at the link at the page in my signature.

There is a HPGL emulator called PRINTGL It is available from

I emailed them but I think they only use a parallel port. I need serial.
Take care.

I appreciate your reply.
I need to plot from within Protel99 SE and Windows XP to the serial (only
port) port of an old HP Draftmaster One (7595A). I believe it uses the
first HP-GL and not the second.

Cass:
What about using a Windows driver for the Draftmaster (or any HP-GL
printer) and plotting to file? Then open a command (DOS) window and
copy it to the plotter port.
I don't know much about XP so this may not work.

That's gotta be the most... interesting user interface I've ever seen on
a Windows program. :)
Great emulation quality, though. I wish I could find the scalable-font
specification the old HP-GL/2 plotters used.
Dunno about XP either, but that technique works like a charm in W95,
W98, WNT, and W2K. Be sure to "copy/b" though, copy binary.
Good thoughtful suggestion but, I can't print to a file with the program
that I am using.
Earlier, I had sent the plotter a test file from a command prompt and it
plotted perfectly but that file was not generated by Protel.
I guess that I am going to have to dedicate a W98 machine solely to ship
data to the plotter for Protel.
Thanks

Indeed. Very stable though. It has a pen density function. Great for
semi transparent coverage such as see through ground and power planes not
to mention ink saving.
I've one other idea. Buy and set up Adobe Acrobat (or one of the free
*.pdf file creators). Print to Adobe which will give you a pdf file
which can then be printed to any Windows printer from Adobe Acrobat. So
all you would need would be a Windows driver for an HP-GL plotter. You
should be able to set up a pen table for Acrobat in your application
(Protel?) to get line widths.

Cass says...
I may not understand what you are saying if you are saying to print to a
file of type .pdf. Protel will not allow me to print to that or any other
file.
However, now, I have the plotter hooked to a W98 machine and it DID seem to
be working just fine. Then, I got a "100" error code and it says to look
it up in the manual. Naturally, with my luck, I don't have a manual on the
HP Draftmaster One (7595A) so, I don't have any idea what error code '100'
is.
I will say that on the W98 machine, the bodies/rectangles of the various
chip outlines (dip) did print and were filled in in color, too. No
connections but I suspect that the error code was the reason that it stopped
before it got to do that - just a guess.
Anyone have a Draftmaster manual that can tell me what error code 100 is?
HP's site doesn't have it.
Thanks for all of your help.

Is this a DOS program? If not, why won't it print to any windows
printer?
If it can print to any window printer, then it can print a *.pdf file
using Adobe or any of the other *.pdf file creators.

I think you misunderstand (otherwise: I do;)
Don´t select the option "Print to file" in your program.
Go to your printer setup in the confiuration of your windows machine. Select
the printer, then properties. Then, at the "details" tab, select "print to
port:" and look for "file".
Then any windowsapp will plot to file. That is not depending on your
program.
HTH,
Frank
However, that is what I have done. The problem is that there is no option
to do that. The program embeds the file in a database.

I just posted to you that the needed file is in a database. On further
reading of your post and then going to see if 'printer setup' allows me to
print to just a file, I see that it does, just as you said.
That was on a W98 box. Now, if I can do the same on an XP box, I suppose
(hope) that I am in business.
Thank you and pardon my slowness.

Yes, Frank (FVe) just posted that to me. I have found that I can, indeed,
do as you guys suggest. The proof will be in the doing and I will try it
and post the results.
Thanks again.

Hi,
Either choose Windows File in stead of access Database when you create
your Protel Project. Or you can export the files inside the idiotic
database they use to the normal windows filing structure. (Right
click on the file it produces when it prints, and select export)
