I have a length of 2-pair cable in my hand that is labelled "BERK-TEK 24
AWG CMR 75C (UL) CSA PCC 60C FT4 HYPERGRADE CAT V 096570 FT".

What is CAT V? I am pretty sure it is not CAT 5, but may be similar.

I would think the V was the roman numeral for 5.

i believe category 5 cable has to live up to certain signalling/noise
characteristics, regardless of number of pairs in the wire.

Cat 5 has to live up to I belive 100 MHz, while Cat 5e has to live up to 300
MHz. I may be a little off in the numbers.

What I have found out or deduced so far:

Berk-Tek is the manufacturer, although an email response from them is of
little help: they directed me to a PDF document on their website which
shows something else.
24 AWG is the conductor size.
CMR indicates it meets safety (flammability?) requirments for use in
building risers.
75C is a temperature rating.
(UL) CSA PCC 60C are regulatory marks.
FT4 ??
Hypergrade is perhaps a Berk-tek trademark, or at least classification.
CAT V is not CAT 5, which is 4-pair cable everywhere I look. This is
2-pair cable, and my theory is that it is the same rating as CAT 5
except for the reduced conductor count.
096570 is, I presume, a Berk-Tek part number, but running it through
their website search engine produces nothing.
FT ??

What I have found out or deduced so far (second edition, as we get
smarter):

Berk-Tek is the manufacturer, although an email response from them is of
little help: they directed me to a PDF document on their website which
shows something else.
24 AWG is the conductor size.
CMR 75C (UL) indicates it meets UL safety (fire-spreading resistance)
requirements for use in building risers.
CSA PCC 60C FT4 are similar Canadian regulatory marks.
Hypergrade is perhaps a Berk-Tek trademark, or at least classification.

CAT V is not CAT 5, which is 4-pair cable everywhere I look. This is
2-pair cable, and my theory is that it is the same rating as CAT 5
except for the reduced conductor count.
096570 FT is a running cable-length indication.

Hmm...
Sounds like a bidnessperson trying to figure out a way to sell a cable
that ALMOST sounds like CAT 5 - but doesn't exactly meet CAT5
requirements. Anybody remember when RG8/U actually meant something?
