I know this is not a computer group ... but it is still the best place
for answers.

I bought a 3.5" card reader for our PC. It is meant to connect to a
DIL USB header on the motherboard.

However, the plug has 9 pins and the header has 11, excluding the
blanked out "key"

Here is a diagram. The colors are the header are the wire colors going
in from the other pair of USB ports that are already connected.

I am hoping one of the experts here can advise how to get this
working.

Does the plug go in the keyed position, leaving the top two pins on
the header empty? Or do I move the plug up to connect to these.,
leaving the bottom two empty.

If the latter, I would need to drill a hole in the plug since it would
bypass the blank key space.

You can see my dilemma. It is a Lenovo board.

You can most likely get the manual online.

My guess would be that you use the end with the missing pin, and the other two pins are for something else, but I would look at the manual. There are very few manufacturers that don't provide manuals on their website. I have had to use them a few times.

Thanks for your reply. I did just that and it worked. The "manual" was
in Chinese, which I am still learning in my spare time.

that seems unusual.

Yes, line up he keys, If I'm reading the colours right that will get
the most important wires in the right places, and either work, or, at
worst do no damage.

Often the key position is a push-fit plug and can be extracted using a
blunt tool from behind. (but don't do that)

Jasen Betts scribbled thus:
If I need to remove those keys, I use a hot darning needle. Very often
you find that they are not a loose peg but are moulded in.
