I would like to learn to program some GALs like 22V8 or 22V10 by Lattice.
I have a device programmer that will program them but I don't know how
to create the file for the programmer.
What software do you use to develop it?
Does it have to be compiled?
Is there a good site that shows how?
Any help would greatly be appreciated.
I can write software in C and Assembly and know Electronics very well.

Thank you in advance,

Rich

Several simple packages which do this: Opaljr21, Place271, Plpl, Plan2,
found here:

There is a program on the Lattice (now Vantis I believe) called ISPDesign
Expert. It is a free download after you register with them and it will allow
you to write files called JEDEC which are the programs for the 22V10 and
other GALs. The URL is http://www.latticesemi.com/products/destools/
The language you program in is called ABEL and is really easy to learn. If
you want a few tutorial type things here is a URL
http://www.engineering.usu.edu/classes/ece/2530/ just click on any of the
tutorials for ABEL...they are not complete in any way, but they should give
a good start. Hope this helps!

P.S. Where did you get your GAL/PAL programmer? Did you build it?

My Programmer is a Logical Devices Multi-Pro.
It is one of the better programmers I have used.
Thank you for the info.

I use ABEL & used to use PALASM.
PALASM is quite old (DOS) but is very easy to use and supports Lattices
GALS.
PALASM was free from AMD -- but I don't know where to find it anymore.
ABEL is also easy to learn, is more powerful, and is available from a number
of sources -- most want $$ for it.
You can get a free version of ABEL from Xilinx -- it mostly pushes the
Xilinx parts, but if I remember correctly -- it also supports the GAL series
of parts that Xilinx acquired from Vantis (or was that somebody else). Even
though it targets the Xilinx parts - it will create generic JEDEC files for
Lattice GAL22V10's as well. I don't remember if it will do GAL16V8's, or
20V8's. Both PALASM and ABEL will create a generic JEDEC file which should
be readable by your programmer.

If you go to the Lattice Homepage they offer a free download of a program
called ISP Design Expert which will allow you to program in a language
called ABEL and then convert to a JEDEC file which is used to actually
program the chip. The URL is
http://www.latticesemi.com/lit_dl/index.cfm?cat=Downloadable%20Software%20an
d%20User%20Manuals

Just download the ISP Design Expert STARTER. It's a great little program and
should work well. By the way, where did you get your GAL programmer? Did you
build it? Anyway, hope this helped!

I have an ancient set of 3.5" Palasm diskettes (Palasm 4, Version 1.2)
that only runs in DOS. I have it running on an old laptop that I bought
from a used computer store for $200 a few years ago. I use it to
program Lattice 22v10s, burning them on a BK Precision Model 844
programmer. It can read the JED files, but not the JDC files (test
vectors added).

What I would like is a cheap (or free) version of Palasm that will run
in Windows or in a DOS box in Windows 98 and/or Windows ME. Anyone have
any ideas?
