I received an E-Mail from charter today indicating they
are dropping their USENET server on Dec 10...

Well, that's fine. If they don't drop their monthly rate, I'll
drop them and move over to AT&T.. Even if AT&T does not offer
a news server, I'll still be able to compensate that with
paying for a monthly News Service and get better results with the
money I'll save with AT&T. I have fiber in front of my house so I
can get a rather moderate speed.

I pay over $50 a month just for internet service and the only
thing I use the most is USENET..

What will be the next thing they'll drop? Access to Youtube? Or
maybe any access to any sort of movie down load services? I see that
coming too!

For plan B: I use this provider for usenet
http://news.individual.net/overview.php
The cost is 10 euros per year, and they do an excellent job filtering
out spam.

I also read good things about Ethernal-September, a free service.

Is that the Charter in Michigan?
I could never get usenet to work for me when I visited my mother there.

In the past I do think they tried to remove the service, I started to
have blank out times and very bad performance. I complained about it and
it magically corrected itself but I can tell you that they were trying
hard to encourage me to go with some one else for the service.

Lately my USENET connects have been random and I only get 2 connects.

This morning I called some one I know that has worked for charter for
years at this location and he told me things that clears up my recent
USENET service issues. Basically they just kept it at a bare minimum in
hopes that eventually users would start paying for it, else where. I
wouldn't be surprised if the next tactic they use is to offer a USENET
service that you have to pay extra for.

If I stay with charter, I should not be surprised those active videos
just stop streaming after a few mins (randomly).

What next? Will the E-Mail service also be a thing of the past? I
wouldn't put it past them.. I am waiting for them
to E-mail notifying me that my webpage no longer exist or I can only
have one E-mail account, not the extras I have for my wife's use.

On top of all that, they lie like hell about the BPS speeds but they
have no problems charging me for their lie.

My friend didn't give me any fuzzy warm feelings about charter's future
plains. He said it has to do with recent changes, what ever that means,
he didn't elaborate.

I would second that, their service is excellent .

[Usual disclaimer: I have no connection with them other than as a
satisfied customer.]

Agreed, but it's text only.

I've used them for seven or eight years (from back when Individual was
free). No problems with them except they get the billing screwed up
once in a while. Not a big deal, just a little inconvenient.

I've been using Eternal September for quite a while now, and it has been
excellent. I have also used www.aioe.org, which is more limited, and
www.teranews.com, which was good for a long time but then went down for a
couple of weeks and they did not respond to email or post any information
about the outage on their web page.

My combined FIOS TV, Internet, and phone is about $100/month. I can also get
limited internet access on my cell phone, which costs me less than $8/month
(Tracfone).

I thought I had a problem once, but then I remembered that I had started
using a new bank card and I hadn't notified their collection agency of
the change.

IIRC my problem turned out to be the card date. It was only a PITA
because of the collection scheme they use. It's not a direct bill so
it takes a while to figure out what has to be changed and where.

I switched to a block account from http://www.usenet-news.net

That way I can buy say 100 gig for like $15 and don't have to pay for
usenet services until I run out. With text that will take several years.
