Does anybody know where to get an MB89352 SCSI controller IC, and about how
much it will cost? Preferably in Australia, but Internet orders are also
fine... Apparently they are/were manufactured by both Fujitsu and Sharp.
Not sure if they're still available though.

A quick Google Groups search showed me that this same question was asked a
couple of years ago, but the supplier recommended at the time (www.pios.com)
don't seem to have any more available... And besides, I figure these ICs
might be available somewhere in Australia now.

If anyone's interested - my reason for asking is that I found an online
parts list for an old Roland HD5-IF expansion card to fit one of their 80s
samplers, the S-550. It allows a SCSI storage device (a zip drive, or an
old SCSI hdd) to be connected, which gives the sampler a whole new lease on
life. I'm about to get an S-550, and I'm looking ways to get as much use
out of it as possible.

The parts list is available here (in German) -
http://www.synrise.de/guests/cwernke/download/roland/hd5if/hd5if.htm

A lot of these parts look obscure, actually (i.e. resistor arrays), so any
help with any of the part numbers there would be greatly appreciated - a
German source is listed on that page, but my online translation gear didn't
manage to make anything coherent out of the links. Contact via e-mail is
probably better - any info will be passed on to the Roland Sampler User's
Group (sgroup) mailing list, and its source will probably be raised to
legendary status... There are people who've been looking for these boards
for *10 years*. :)

Hope to hear from someone,
- Gareth

(afterthought - if anyone happens to be an ex-gear tech and has schematics
for these things lying around, they'll *definitely* be raised to
legendary/god-like status.)

I doubt that a distributor would have these "on-the-shelf" anymore,
seeing as how it is a rather specialized part from a couple of years
back. A quick Google search reveals that this chip is used in at
least some PCMCIA and ISA host adapters; you can probably find
one of those and remove the chip far more readily than you can find
the individual chip.

Roland Australia in Dee Why has Service Notes with schematics and
discriptions of parts used. They sell them. I have quite a few, but
don't think I have the SCSI interface your after.

Thanks for the replies, guys.

I'd written Roland Australia e-mail asking about this issue and a couple of
other things, but received no response in quite a while and had basically
given up. After writing this post I called them directly and was put
through to the spare parts department. They have both service notes
(including schematics, etc.) and manuals for the HD5-IF SCSI expansion card,
and even have a few MB89352 chips left, but are asking over A$80 for them.
With this in mind I'll keep trying to find PCMCIA and ISA host adapters that
might contain the chip, and call Roland as a last resort if I get desperate.

Anyway, thanks very much for the help.
