I am searching for a few RCA CA3030 op amps to repair a piece of
elderly electronic equipment.

Are there some vendors that specialize in out of date IC's?

Thanks

Malcolm

You can probably find a ECG or NTE replacement for it. Try
www.nteinc.com and I forget what ECG 's web site is.

Gee, I'm bumfuzzled as to why an RCA opamp doesn't have a replacement.
Maybe it's just so old that no one bothers to buy them any more. I'll
have to check my old RCA linear catalog when I get home, and see what
the specs are. Usually, any opamp can be subbed with an equal or better
one. You have to deal with the package, of course..

I used to sub 10 pin TO-5 packages in place of 14 pin DIP packages.
It's a bit tedious bending all those leads to fit the holes, but it
worked.

Malcolm, NTE *did* have a substitute for the CA3030...I found it in a 1990
NTE catalog. But I forgot to bring the piece of paper w/ the NTE part
listed - D'Oh! There's a chance that an NTE distributor may still have the
part, so I'll followup w/ the NTE number tomorrow (Tuesday).

There are firms which specialize in obsolete semiconductor devices;
Rochester Electronics, the Kreuger Co., & Pure Unobtainium are three I can
think of. I don't have their addresses handy, but I'll try to remember to
dig 'em up tomorrow. You might want to look at Filip G.'s web page
(http://www.repairfaq.org/filipg/) too, as I think he's got a listing of
obsolete parts sources.

OK, The NTE cross for the CA3030 was NTE 908, according to the '90 NTE
catalog. Hopefully there's a distributor which still has this device
available.

I did pull my 1978 RCA linear IC catalog (SSD-240A) from home, & it does
list the CA3030 & CA3030A...it looks like the device is a bit interesting.
The CA3030 was one of a family of eight op amps in four different packages
and either +/- 6 V or +/- 12 supply voltages. The A version devices look
like improved versions of the basic family.

Here's some pertinent specs for the CA3030A. Low frequency open loop gain
is typ. 70 dB, 67 dB @ about 300 kHz, 0 dB @ about 60 MHz. Low frequency
CMRR is typ. 103 dB, 90 dB at about 1 MHz, 70 dB @ about 10 MHz. Input
impedance (single ended) is about 10 kohm @ 1 kHz, output impedance is typ.
85 ohm @ 1 kHz. Input offset voltage is typ. 1 mV, input offset current is
typ. 0.5 uA, input bias current is typ. 4.7uA. Minimum CM input voltage
range is +0.65 V, -8 V w/ +/- 12 V supplies. Slew rate is typ. 7 V/us.
The CA3030 has similar AOL, CMRR & input CM voltage specs, somewhat higher
input offset & bias specs, ssomewhat lower Zin, slightly higher Zout, & no
spec on slew rate.

Unfortunately, the catalog doesn't give any application notes for the
CA3030, but the data sheet references three application notes (ICAN-5015,
ICAN-5213 & ICAN-5290) which provide the info necessary to compensate the
op amp.

I don't know of a direct replacement for this device, other than the NTE
908 or perhaps one of the other op amps in the family rated for +/- 12 V
operation (CA3015/A, 12 lead TO-5 can; CA3016/A, 14 lead flat pack;
CA3038/A, 14 pin ceramic DIP)

(snip)

Hope this is of some help; good luck!

The '97 NTE catalog lists this as a 12v OP amp that
they have discontinued.
