Hi All!
I am viewing an electronic circuit diagram and the capacitor symbols
are very confusing: There are only two types of symbol for capacitor
used on this diagram.
The first is the regular two lines perpendicular to the connection..
something like this -||-

The second is -|[]- where [] is a rectangular box outline not
shaded in.. is this a polarized cap? There is no plus symbol on this
capacitor. The box is connected to the positive power lead. The value
is given as 2200uF.. this diagram originated from UK.. is this a
European standard or something?

regards, Jim

Yes, completely standard over here. As you surmise, the empty box is positive.
The other side is usually the same size but filled in with ink (or electrons if
it's on a screen).

anti spammer and not an insult !

Actually, I thought the parallel lines were only "legal" for relay contacts
now, and --|(---
is the symbol for *any* capacitor nowadays (polarized or not). (Ever since
the I.E.E.E. tried to straighten us out some time agao, since they knew
best).

Yes, the 'box' symbol is a polarised cap. The box is +ve. This is common in
Europe.
