trickle charge definition please

Hi. I've seen "trickle charge" mentioned many times on this newsgroup,
but never seen it defined. Can someone please explain the term.

Would solar power recharging of a car battery be considered trickle
charge? Thanks for any help,

Basically means charging at a very small amperage constantly over a long
period of time.

Yes. If you are talking about a remote control car. A car battery is
usually about 500AH (Amp Hours) meaning it normally can support a 500A load
for about an hour. It would take weeks, maybe even a month to charge a car
battery with a couple of solar cells. It would be, however, considered
trickle charging.

A trickle charge is one that is more than a float charge but still not
a really significant charge rate. The actual current will depend on the
size of the battery. For example, 0.5 to 1 A would be a trickle charge
for an ordinary automotive battery, but would be a standard charge for
a small battery, such as a D cell.
A trickle charge will charge the battery eventually (but don't hold your breath).

A float charge is a constant voltage condition that holds the battery in
whatever state it is in, usually a fully charged (or nearly so) condition.
A charger supplying a float voltage will supply very little current, just
the leakage current of the battery. which is even less than a trickle charge.

500 AH?

Where can I get me one of those beasts? Next time I run out of gas,
I could just crank the starter motor all the way home. ;)

WOW! Where can I buy one of these beauties? Has anyone told the
electric car makers about this technology breakthrough? Patent it soonis
my advice.

Yup. A trickle charge is vaguely defined as a low-current charge.
Possibly the definition could be tightened up somewhat if it was
determined whether this low charging current was low enough to be left
flowing through the battery at all times without causing damage through
overcharge. But I think that many trickle chargers shove enough current
through a storage battery to boil it dry.

A solar powered battery charger would certainly be considered a trickle
charger.

Not necessarily, it all depends on the size and current output of the
panels. A solar powered charger capable of supplying up to 300W would
definately not be considered as a trickle charger.
