In the book The Great Divide, John Sperling performs an analysis
of the two Americas: what he called Metro and Retro. He places
the Northeast Coast, Great Lakes and Western Coast states - states
that mostly vote Democratic - in the Metro category, and South,
Midwest and Rockies - states that mostly vote Republican - in the
Retro category. According to his computation, the Metro states
over years 1991 to 2001 paid $1.4 trillion in taxes more than they
got back; the Retro states, during the same period, received $800
billion more from the government than they paid in. The Metro
states possessed 65% of the population, paid 71% of all taxes, had
10 times more Nobel laureates than the Retro section of the United
States, and specialized in manufacturing, financial services and
information industries - all of them non-subsidized - while the
conservative states of the country specialized in government-
subsidized farming and extraction.
Does anyone else see the sheer absurdity of what we've been
hearing over the last 25 years? Of what we've been living - of
what was told to the United States? The conservatives shout that
the government takes away American taxpayers' money - then live
off of American taxpayer. The conservatives shout that they are
the engine of the economy - then produce one tenth the number of
Nobel Laureates that the Liberals produce and pay 29% of federal
taxes and live off of government subsidies. You don't want no
government on your backs? Fine then, make your money honestly like
the liberals. Get rid of the agricultural and extraction subsidies
and unchecked ranching on federal lands and work, like the
liberals, in a globally competitive marketplace where you compete
with people from other countries and see who's honestly the best.
When I was driving through San Joaquin valley, there was a sign
that said, "Farmers feed America." That is not exactly true. It
is the rest of America - the people especially in the cities, who
use their creativity and imagination and entrepreneurship to
produce the bulk of America's wealth, that feed the American
farmers through giant subsidies they pay them in taxes. What San
Joaquin farmers fail to realize is that they are some of 3
billion. A huge chunk of the world's population are farmers; and
if American people chose to, they could easily bypass the
bullying, coddled, violent, child-molesting, moralizing American
farmers and buy food from the rest of the world, giving millions
of Third World individuals a chance at a decent existence.
America's farmers live off of the governmental largesse, and it is
only apathy and ignorance among America's voters that prevents
them from knowing just how utterly they've been had.
Or that it's them that have been feeding America's farmers, and
not the other way around. That, furthermore, they can easily do
without these parasites and go to the global market to get their
sustenance, where millions of people from all over the planet are
anxious and ready to sell America food.
Family values? Work ethic? Responsibility? Then stop having sex
with your daughters and nieces, and make your money honestly,
intelligently, without government support. Compete, like America's
manufacturing workers and programmers, against the rest of the
world and see who's honorably the best. Don't skate on government
handouts and intelligence of liberal-state scientists; develop
your own creativity, your own intelligence and your own
innovation - all things you destroy in your children, forcing
yourselves to live off the creative activity of liberal-state
people who get to keep and develop these qualities and whose minds
are not paralyzed with artificial constraints.
It is New York, Massachusetts and California that have been
carrying this country forward. It is the creative, innovative
activity of America's liberal states that has led the world, and
they are the true engine of America's growth. The Southern and
Midwestern farming and extraction industries have been parasitical
to the country, through artificial government subsidies paid for
by liberal-state Americans taking money away from Third World
individuals who, in an honest subsidy-free environment, would
whoop the ass of the macho anti-government Republican American
farmers and oil men and show to the world what utter hypocrites
they are.
And who in fact has been robbing the country.
It would not be so bad if these parasites had not been so
heavy-handed, so moralizing, so abrasive, so vicious, so
in-your-face. But what I am seeing is a bunch of abusive right-
wing blowhards, supported and subsidized by the rest of America,
telling the rest of America that they are its betters and that
the government is evil while they depend on the government (and
on the rest of America) for their livelihood. In the meanwhile the
rest of America gives them its money that they produce through
creativity and innovation - all qualities the conservatives
destroy in their children - and carries on its back their dead
weight, while denying the Third World individuals the ability to
honestly make money through competing, like manufacturers and
programmers and financeers compete, for America's market in
food and oil.
It is time for the liberal states - the true source of America's
innovation and power - to flex their muscle and leave in the dust
the lying, abusive, bullying, leeching, wife-beating, child-
molesting Bible-belt American conservatives who have for 25 years
deceived America into believing themselves its soul. It is time
that the people who have truly led America forward - its
scientists, its innovators, its financiers, its entrepreneurs, its
professors and teachers and programmers - spoke up to the bullying
Rush Limbaugh blowhards and gave them a true reality check of
telling them who has in fact been leading America and who has
subsidized whom. It is time the people who shouted for welfare
reform be denied the far more expensive welfare that they have
themselves been receiving from the American government, which they
say they want off their backs, and compete in global economy like
everyone else in America. It is time the best of America - its
creative, innovative, achieving, ingenious half - recognized its
value and threw off its backs the lying, shouting, bullying,
leeching American conservatives and made them compete with the
rest of the world without government subsidies, like everyone else
in America and like their stated support for free enterprise
demands.

Politicians misbehave in many ways. They don't do it
because they want to be public servants. They misbehave
because they lust for power. If governments were more limited
in scope, the prize would be smaller, and so the misbehavior
would be curbed.

This theory ignores the fact that the most lucrative way to feather your own nest
while in government is to accept bribes from the private sector.

It's not a theory. It's a statement of fact! If people just want to
be public servants, why on earth should they have to misbehave?!?
As to bribery of government officials, that goes on under every system.
In the Soviet Union, and many other countries with heavy-handed
control, you would have to bribe the bread vendor, the policeman,
the civil servant, you name it. The more limited the government
the fewer opportunities there are for stupid shit like that!
Oh, I see. You have inserted an exclamation point as proof.

So the Communists are out and Russian government is much less powerful. And are
there fewer opportunities for corruption and bribery in government? LOL. Now,
instead of the bread vendor and policeman taking petty bribes, you have people like
Yeltsin selling off the common assets of the entire country to his friends and
family. This is the result of a weak state dominated by private interests.

Hi,
Interesting that you chose 25 years. That has been the time of liberal US
trade policies that have been instituted mostly by conservative Republicans
over the objection of people who consider themselves to be Progressive and
who are mostly Democrats.

Simplistic, many states including Wisconsin are about evenly divided. Many
have one senator from each party or a governor from one party but senators
from the other. We have had 2 Democrat senators and a Republican governor
for years until the last election. And note the governor of California.
Closer would be to divide big cities vs rural/small towns and suburbs. And
each of these needs the other to survive.

Er, isn't it the Liberal-Progressives like Kucinich and Nalph Nader who
want the US to withdraw from WTO and NAFTA? I mean sure so do the Pat
Buchanan Rebublicans, but they have less influence. And who complains the
most about outsourcing and foreign competition? However much these aid the
poor people of the world.

Candidates don't spend millions on negative advertising,
with smears, slurs, lies, insinuations, etc. just to become
a public servant. They do it because they lust for power!

You cannot eliminate government. All you can do is try to control it
in such a way as to make it beneificial. That is what constitutions
are about.
"Our House of Representatives was defined by The United States Constitution
to be the seat of government power. Our nation, as it currently exists, is
a Fascist State run by an appointed king and his court of privileged law
makers." --- http://GreaterVoice.org

"I know no safe depository of the ultimate powers of society but
the people themselves; and if we think them not enlightened enough
to exercise their control with a wholesome discretion, the remedy
is not to take it from them, but to inform their discretion by
education." - Thomas Jefferson. http://GreaterVoice.org
