I have several old mercury manometers manufactured by Gallenkamp that
have a U-tube which is closed at one end and a stopcock at the other
- possibly these are called Anschutz manometers. I want to empty
them, clean the U-tube and then refill with mercury, but unfortunately
do not have the instructions to accomplish this. Would anyone have a
set of instructions they could fax to me or point me in the right
direction. My fax # is 61 2 6249 5995. Please reply to my e-mail
address (he...@rsc.anu.edu.au).

TIA

You do not need instructions. You need to talk to your lab's trusty glass
blower.

He's probably the swarthy guy selling chips and gravy down at the corner.

You remove the mercury, disassemble the hardware, remove any metal
parts. Soak in nitric acid to remove residues (hood), wash with
distilled water, dry at 110 C overnight. Refill with triple-distilled
mercury. Stopcock lubrication should be Apeizon or Flurolube.
Silicone doesn't stick in there for the long haul.

It's no longer environmentally correct to use mercury for this sort of
thing.

Unfortunately, mercury manometers don't seem to be rivalled by electronic
gauges in terms of resistance to contamination/corrosion and price. I hope
some manufacturer will contradict me.

Environmentally Correct? What is this, an offshoot of political
correctness? In the hands of qualified people and when used in intact and
properly working instruments, mercury is not an environmental concern.
There are many far more dangerous substances to worry about than mercury.

stick a thin slender plastic tube through the petcock long enough to reach the
air space to vent the closed end ,, apply small amount of air pressure and
manipulate the tube to drain the HG . Use the cap tube to clean and flush and
to refill. By the way a U tube manometer will not be accurate if closed on one
end unless it was a special calibration to use the compressed gas or evacuated
space on the closed end as part of the calibration.

Yes. Throw them out immediately.

Reminds me of the anti-fur demonstrator who wanted to yell at me about 'the
innocent sheep that had to die' for my wool sweater.
