How do I prepare the RedOx Indicator Ferroin (sp?) from 1,10-phenantroline and
Iron sulfate?

Simply dissolve orthophenathroline (quantity calculated to give
3 bases per iron) in 0.02 M acid free ferrous sulphate.

40 year old chemistry and sometimes the beginning of Alzheimer dims
the memory.

3 moles of 1,10-phenanthroline (usually the mono hydrate but a salt is
OK) to one mole of iron. Probably ferrous ammonium sulfate is the
best source for the iron.

A solution which is 0.025 molar with respect to iron is adequate. This
of course would be 0.075 for the ligand. If you use the monohydrate
you might need a touch of acid to get the base in solution.

Usually use one drop of solution for a 300 ml volume. The color change
will be from red to colorless (or the reverse). Actually the +3
complex is blue but you won't see that at these concentrations.

One drop is equivalent to less than 0.01 ml of 0.1 N oxidizing agent.
A blank probably isn't necessary. The indicator is stable for years.

If you have the compounds have at it. If you don't you might consider
buying the indicator already prepared.

Ferroin is the correct spelling.
