Hi everyone,
I am having a problem with these questions?

write the simplest formula for each of the following compounds:

0.200 mole Al and 0.600 mole Cl

0.080 mole Ba, 0.080 mole S, 0.320 mole O

thanks for the help

Simple arithmetic.
Calculate the ratios of the components.

Julie,

Try to determine the ratio of the numbers for the different elements.
As an example I'll give you the answer for a similar problem.

0.40 mole C
1.20 m0le H
0.20 mole O

The simplest possible ratio for C, H and O is C:H:O = 2:6:1. Of course,
other ratios are possible, such as 4:12:2 or 1:3:0.5, but you should
determine the simplest ratio with only integer numbers. For this
example that simplest ratio is 2:6:1.
This yields formula C2H6O.

Hint: Divide all numbers by the smallest number. For my example, this
means dividing by 0.20. Division by the smallest number either gives
the simplest ratio, or fractional ratio's, which are easy to recognize.

Another (slightly more difficult) example:

0.600 Al
0.900 O

Dividing by the smallest number (0.600) gives Al:O = 1:1.5.
This is not an integer ratio. However, as can easily be seen,
multiplying by 2 gives Al:O = 2:3, the simplest formula hence is Al2O3.

I hope this helps you in deriving the answer to your questions,

Wilco

PS: Possible compounds with the formula C2H6O are plain alcohol
(ethanol) and dimethylether. Al2O3 is aluminium oxide.

Once you will have made your arithmetics, see how nature has solved the
problem by going to:

http://un2sg4.unige.ch/athena/mineral/search.html

At the bottom of the page, enter in the slot "Search mineral formula": Ba
S O --->press search---> and you will get only one SIMPLE formula.

For Al Cl, the matters become much more complicated, but after all, that's
concerns nature!
