Making pure ammonium nitrate from fertilizer

I have read in a book that it is possible to obtain pure ammonium nitrate from
fertilizer by dissolve the last in methanol and then poor the liquid on a cold
surface to crystalize. You obtain this way pure ammonium nitrate.

Is the percentage of nitrogen in the fertilizer of any importance ?
