Hi there,

I would like to know, if the following molecules are diamagnetic or
paramagnetic:
chlorite ClO2-
chlorate ClO3-
perchlorate ClO4-
peroxochlorate Clo2(OO)-

I hope there's anyone around here who knows it...

If you're a chemist who needs to know for experimental reasons, you can
easily figure these out on your own. If you're a student looking for
homework answers, learn the material or look elsewhere.

1) Add up the number of electrons - odd or even?
2) For the even numbers, singlet or triplet?

Peroxochlorate is a bad idea in sooo many ways...

I hope I'm a well trained chemist, but the last time I was confronted
with MO-theory-stuff was about 10 years ago.
I'm quite sure that clorite, chlorate and perchlorate are diamagnetic,
but I'm not about peroxochlorate... it has 40 electrons, but is it
singulett or triplett, diamagnetic or paramagnetic?

and @ Uncle Al

in what ways is peroxochlorate a bad idea?

Sorry, calculating is quite hard in the morning, it has 32 electrons

After trying to remember what I learned about MO theory years ago, I
think peroxochlorate should be diamagnetic too. But as I'm not so sure
about it comments would be appreciated.

@ Uncle Al:
I would still like to know why you think peroxochlorate is a bad idea
in many ways.

All electrons are paired in all cases. All species are diamagnetic.
Carefully - no friction! - mix a chlorate salt with an equal amount of
table sugar, then ignite. Wooooeeee! Perchlorate has a big knetic
barrier from its symmetry and steric hindrance. Chlorate has no
barriers. It is an incredibly dangerous oxidizer in the presence of
fuel. Peroxochlorate is a self-contained bomb.

Unreactive unpaired spins generally require burial in d- or f-orbitals
(paramagnetic transition and inner transtion metal ions), orbital
filling footnotes (elemental dioxygen), or nitrogen (for its odd
number of electrons) and some pluck (NO, NO2 monomer, DPPH, TEMPO;
nitronyl nitroxides, verdazyls, etc.). In non-stoichiometric low
density, paramagnetic free radical species are abundant - coal,
melanin, some pyrolytic graphites.

The only difference between chlorate and peroxychlorate is that the
peroxychlorate has an extra O singly bonded to one of the O's bonded to Cl.
That doesn't change the bonding picture at Cl, nor the spin multiplicity, at
all.

Practical applications of Per/Chlorates

NH4ClO4 -- Ammonium Perchlorate and Alu dust in
Polyurethane is used as solid propellants from the
Polaris-, Trident to the Minuteman missiles as well as
in the Shuttle boosters. Enviro shits complained that
70 tons of HCl is released into the atmosphere with
each launch... ahahaha... Anybody know how much
their permit fees and user charges were?..... ahahaha...

NaClO3 -- Sodium Chlorate, the Soil Sterilant makes
effective but low brisanz explosives and as said above
& it is an effective oxidizer for anything organic. To wit:
In the parking lot of the assembly division they had a
street side green corner spot about 50 ft x 20 ft which
was always overrun by the 18-wheelers and made it
unsightly. So Maintenance decided to kill the grass
and brush off with NaClO3 and let the trucks compact
the mulch into a hard, bare-soil spot hoping that the
city wouldn't notice nor bitch. So, they emptied and
spread two 100 lbs drums of NaClO3 onto it and
watered it for 10 minutes. Time went by. Summer
came... and one day fine a car parked at that curb,
out of which the driver flicked his still lit cigarette butt
onto that ground. 5 seconds later there was white smoke
emerging from there.. and ever more.. car took off.. and
so did the conflagration. For 2 minutes, 10 ft tall yellow
flames & smoke shot out of the ground all the over the whole
place. It looked like we had our own mini volcano going.
Was great!.. 5 minutes later the fire dept came and they
flooded the place. "Happens all the time, all over the
place" said the fire chief laconically... ahahaha... That
was then. Today TV, the moon suite dudes and Chertoffs
soldiers would come with the tank from SWAT and look
for terrorists... ahahaha... ahahaha... ahahanson

Hey, Tutweiler, I never went to any Catholic school. The Saltpeter
they were supposed to have used was more likely either NaNO3
and/or NaNO2, which was to suppress development of Botulism in
the food, but not even remotely enough to act as vasodilator to
have the Viagra effect that the nuns were hoping for. -- In our
church I had a far better situation that often culminated in those
memorable, forbidden rides and 69ers which Laura Lee, the
Reverend Koster's lovely wife, anointed and blessed me with, right
in the church, on the altar, next to the grail filled with holy water with
which I washed my balls after the union was consummated and the
deed was done.... Was great! -- Unfortunately, when the reverend
finally caught us, the old dumb-shit, instead of joining us in a holy
trinity for continuing with a noble threesome, the pastor got mad at
me for some unfathomable reason and he prepared the proceedings
for my excommunication because I was unrepentant and he added
for me a one way ticket out of town to it. Never looked back!... But
Laura Lee wherever you are you were a great fuck... So help me god!

To American version of Christians for sure.

.... ahahahaha... Mehram, for you being black, Farra's
route is a pious way for you to follow, the path to your
72 Isalamic raisins aka Islamic Huris, with or without
a preceding "w"... ... However, your proselytizing for
Islam here is even worse then the pole dance method
you used in

which was a botched abortion attempt by you from

above was even worse.....

Oh dear. You know, we're not talking two different
languages, we're just different. Period.

As a matter of fact this push and pull of I trying to
make a jackass understand a few things for the first
time, and the jackass continuing to chew the watermelon
skin and making mkhmkhmkh sounds (out of joy), reminds
me of something. Something I said a few years back
right here. Believe me, a lot of crap should come my
way before I start to feel that way.

You do remember the story I related about Hessaby (a
physics professor in Tehran University) meeting
Einstein in the forties. But do you remember the one,
also about Hessaby, that I quoted and translated and
posted here, about his meeting with the minister of
higher education in Iran of Shah's time? It has become
that bad! You've started to make me feel like how he
did at the end of his conversation with him.

Shit, I've got to find that one and read it again.
Hopefully I will, but a lot of what I posted to usenet
have been wiped off by American crybabies who couldn't
stand a few straight words about themselves. Or who
knows, could be that they were actually trying to save
my life :) Hehe :)

Yes it's still there. Here's the link, and see it for
yourself what I'm trying to say. Hassan, stop being a
jackass.
