LABX UPDATE
-New Category - Process/Pilot Plant Equipment. This is a scientific
equipment magazine so only process and pilot plant equipment of a
scientific
nature will be included.
-New Search Engine. Searching now offers some interesting capability.
If,
for example, you want to locate ads for a Perkin Elmer 5000 Atomic
Absorption Instrument...it's not a problem now. Enter "Perkin 5000" and
that's what you will get. The system will match ALL words entered in
the
search box, so any ads that contain both the words Perkin and 5000 are
displayed. Or you can choose to find ANY of the words entered in the
search
box...so that if an ad contains Perkin in it, the ad is displayed along
with
any ads which contain the word 5000 in it. You can also choose to do a
phrase search, which was our original search style. It will look for
the
phrase "Perkin 5000", which would probably not get any results.
-LabX V2 underway. The design of LabX (V1 - version 1) is getting
dated.
We've started a massive overhaul of the system to make it simpler to
use,
faster, more elegant and organizing access to our site's offerings.
-LabX was in PC Week's June 30th edition for our use of the Cold Fusion
programming language.
-LabX was chosen as a "Top 5% Chemistry Site" last week.
LABAUCTION
After some initial problems with Labauction, and correcting some bugs,
Labauction is running. After much feedback, we've changed the auction
types. Reserved Price Auction has been removed. There is now a
Standard
Auction which means you simply have to meet the minimum bid price and
have
the highest bid in order to win. There is also a Reserved Rights
Auction,
which means the seller has reserved the right to reject any and all
offers.
The LabAuction fee will eventually be $50 or two listing credits for
LabX
Pro members. But LabAuction will run for at least another week at no
charge
until we work the bugs out. We make no warranty as to the quality of
the
bidders or sellers in Labauction, just like the classified ads. If you
do
win a labauction, we still offer our trademaker service which you might
wish
to use to provide a more secure transaction. http://www.trademaker.com
COMPUTER CORNER
If you bought A SCANNER in the last year or two, you're going to cry
when
you read this. As you already know, most computer equipment you
purchase
drops in price the moment you leave the store. Decent scanners cost
$400 to
$500 only a year ago. But now there is a crop of quality scanners for
under
$200. I'm serious. Check out the Microtek ScanMaker E3. At under
$200,
you get a flat bed (computer talk for...it looks and acts just like a
small
photocopier) single pass scanner. And it's a good scanner. At 300 dpi,
it
should far exceed most peoples requirements.
If you're still running a 486 computer, you've got lots of company.
Many
people still are. If you enjoy surfing the net though, your 486 is
probably
lacking some low cost key features like a modern video graphics card.
The
older video graphics cards usually only display 256 colors. You'll know
the
problem only too well if you surf the web and go to any of the better
web
sites. If your computer monitor supports SVGA (most monitors sold over
the
past four years will), you can pick up a SVGA capable video graphics
card
for $50 with 2 MegaByte of memory. It's all you really need if you're
running a 14 or 15 inch monitor. More expensive graphics cards are
probably
a waste of money on 14/15 inch monitors. For most desktops, people
don't
realize it (or don't care), but video graphic card performance today is
almost identical between the cheap $60 video card and the $300 expensive
video card if you are running in 800 X 600 mode or less (which is what
most
people will run with a 14 or 15 inch monitor). More often than not,
people
will buy an expensive video card with a 14 or 15 inch monitor...usually
a
waste of money. The monitor is an important part, and you should note
that
17 inch monitors have also come down substantially in price recently.
You
can get a decent 17 inch monitor now for well under $500. Expect larger
monitors to keep dropping in price. When you get into a 17 inch
monitor,
you want a good video card. There is an entirely new generation of
video
cards coming onto the market now, so choose wisely. The newer cards are
priced similarly to the old cards, but offer substantially improved
performance which you will notice when running at resolutions higher
than
800 x 600.
We get lots of questions about computers from our users. A couple of
common
ones are...why is my hard disk always running when I'm on the web?
Answer:
The web browser (ie: Netscape) requires lots of RAM to function. You've
probably only got 8 Megabytes of RAM...maybe even 16. Once you start
surfing, your web browser starts eating up your RAM as it stores every
page
you visit in RAM. RAM is extremely fast. But when you run out of RAM,
the
computer starts to temporarily put the web pages on your disk drive.
When
that starts to happen, your system will slow down dramatically as your
hard
disk will start to work really hard each time you go to a new or visited
web
page. The solution is to increase the amount of RAM on your computer.
In
Windows 3.1, if you install lots of RAM, that may not be sufficient.
You
still have to configure your hard drive caching/spooling...something
which
Windows 95 does automatically for you.
Question: I'm on the web, and I'm not even using the computer and the
hard
disk drive is running constantly. I'm worried someone's accessing my
computer from the web. Answer: While it's possible, it's extremely
unlikely
for someone to be accessing your hard drive on the web. It's even more
unlikely that a competitor is accessing your hard drive on the web,
unless
you are connected to the internet via your network. Then you should be
concerned, because a network connection to the internet has great cause
for
security concern. But if you typically phone up your ISP by modem and
work
the internet for short periods of time (like less than several hours),
you
are pretty safe from competitors. Nothing is ever 100%, but it sure is
close to it. If you have _really_ serious concerns about your data
being
exposed on the web, it shouldn't be on the computer you use on the
internet.
To answer the original question, the hard disk activity that occurs in
your
computer when you are not using it is just normal Windows 95
maintenance.
Windows 95 detects when you are not using your computer and trys to
optimize
your files for improved performance and access. Another Microsoft
Program
which activates the computer drive frequently is called Find Fast. If
you've installed Microsoft Office, the default setting for Find Fast
activation is every 2 hours. Simply locate Find Fast on your computer
and
change the setting to every 48 hours or so.
Have a great week!
