I want to identify a caterpillar in my garden. It is about 10cm when
fully grown and is black with white and yellow spots. It turns into a
large black butterfly with similar colouring. It eats balsam/impatiens
plants and it's chrysalis is brown and I have found them buried in the
soil. I was wanting to know what it is, whether it needs to be buried
to successfully change into a butterfly and how long it is in the
chrysalis stage.
