Greetings, All--
In March '98 Jim Hasenauer posted an announcement from rec.bikes.off-road
dealing with the red-legged frog (rana aurora) of California being added to
the "threatened species" list. Because the frog eggs, layed in shallow
creeks/streams, are very sensitive to siltation, the US Fish and Game
Commission decreed that the Santa Cruz State Parks District (home to a
large community of these frogs) would have to address all stream crossings.
The method of mitigation was very flexible--bridges, culverts, reroutes,
etc, but ALL users were to be prevented from riding/walking through such
streams...
I cannot find follow-up references to the US F&G edict--can someone on the
listserv with a better memory (or better filing system) provide me with the
Park District's actions? Further, can you provide information on the use
of low bridges on trails shared with horses? Designs, materials,
horse-specific problems with bridges, etc. Any help is greatly
appreciated!
Regards,

I am working on creating wildlife habitat that is off-limits to
humans ("pure habitat"). Want to help? (I spent the previous 8
years fighting auto dependence and road construction.)
