This is the first time these images have been available to the general
public. The original edition of "Botanica Magnifica" was a lavish,
five-volume, hand-bound set (limited to 10 copies), a double-elephant
folio on the scale of Audubon's "Birds of America," and the first such
folio since that groundbreaking work. One set was donated to the
Smithsonian Institution Libraries, which is fitting, as along with the
glorious images of orchids, flowers, survival-adapting plants and
ginger is a section devoted to the rare species from the collection of
the National Museum of Natural History. Undoubtedly a
once-in-a-lifetime publication...
