I'm interested in the Celestron C5+. Has anyone used it? Any advice?
Or is there a "better" one for the same price range?
Thanks in advance!
Lily
P:s I was at a star party and the C5+ had much better inages than a guy beside
me with a 10" Meade reflector on an equitorial mount.
I've had my C5+ for just three years now - it's my only scope at the moment.
Certain denizens of this newsgroup may well point out that the C5+ is *only*
a five inch SCT (buy an eight inch), with a *40%* central obstruction (buy a
Mak), with a *single* arm mount (buy a German equatorial), with a non-PEC
*spur* gear drive, etc., etc.
However, in my view, you can't go wrong with this purchase. The optics seem
to be consistently good, and the mechanics are excellent. I use my C5+ just
about any reasonably clear evening. This lil' scope also provides an
excellent platform for piggyback astrophotography, and, with some patience,
prime focus use. Although the standard field tripod does well, if you think
you might want to try some photos, I'd recommend the heavier tripod and the
vibration damping pads.
Good seeing...

I own a C5+, and it is a very good scope optically, a view shared by
many other users, whether it be for daylight or night viewing. The
mount is steady enough for everything except for CCD imaging, and
the entire setup is light in weight and very portable. In my books
well worth the price since a C8 is almost twice as heavy, without
sacrificing a lot in terms of ability to see objects.
Get it! You won't regret it!
Clear and Steady Nights!
P.S. If later you want to get into CCD imaging, this scope can do it,
but you'll need to place it on a better mount such as the Great Polaris
mount, which the C5 fits into without any modifications.

It depends on what you mean by "better", Lily. For nearly the same
money, you can get a larger reflector--a good 8"dob or a C8. There are
more portable scopes around, like smaller refractors. How much weight
can you manage? Do you have friends who can help you transport and set
up the scope? There is a good FAQ around to help you chose the best
scope for you. The C5 is a nice compromise of portability and power,
with pretty good quality, and you probably wouldn't regret getting
one. Have you looked through one, and compared it to other scopes?
