Not past life, current life. Why would she say this? Mars is a billion-years past desiccated husk of a planet. The best chance for any life are the moons of the gas giants or perhaps, the atmosphere of Venus.

Mars is much closer!
Any mission to those moons takes 10 years just to get there!
