I have often heard it pronounced "play-ah-dees" and "plee-ah-dees"
myself.

Really.
I pronounce it PLY-a-deez. Americans pronounce it differently.

I can't believe this thread. Haven't any of you bozos heard of a
dictionary? Most, if not all, contain a pronunciation guide
immediately after the word itself. And guess what: Pleiades is
defined in most of them (the CD version of the American Heritage
Dictionary being a notable exception).
Talk about the dumbing down of America . . .

Funny, the only guy that doesn't have an answer is the first one to
bitch about those who do.
And just to keep on topic.... I've heard several people say
PLAY-uh-deez.
I for one would not trust a US dictionary on matters of pronunciation. I
think the thread raises a valid point, and is also an interesting discussion
topic.
Greetings from Sydney, Australia!

Hey Sydney,
Try the Oxford-English dictionary, would that do?
By the way, don't you folks in Austria speak German? ;-)

Not quite, but check out http://www.ozramp.net.au/~senani/strine.htm to see
how we really speak!

Ok, Ok, enough of the American bashing, I get enough of that in the alt.war
newsgroup.
I thought you guys still referred to our country as "the colonies." :^)

Ok, here's the thing... Pleiades is a GREEK word, not an English word, so
why not use the original Greek pronounciation? There are several accepted
pronounciations of ancient Greek, I draw upon the one used in Biblical
Greek, which would have 'Pleiades' pronounced 'PLAY-ah-des' with a short 'e'
sound and an 's', not a 'z' sound on the end. I suppose this could be
slightly different depending who you learned your Greek from. You could
also argue using modern Greek, but that is pronounced way different than
ancient Greek, and since 'Pleiades' was named in ancient times, ancient
Greek seems more appropriate. Maybe the IAU should have a pronounciation
standard as well.
"said-day-eye-elp" for those who are dislexic.

Interestingly, seriously, and completely off-topic, I used to think that
'gotten' as the past participle of the verb 'to get' was a horrible
Americanism. Then an English University professor told me that in fact
it was the English spoken in England when the Pilgrim Fathers set out,
and in actual fact it was the English that was the variant, not the
American.
So, we're not completely perfect.

Neither, actually ... I work for a Japanese company, and discuss Astronomy with
some of the Japanese nationals working there from time to time, and they
pronounce it, most emphatically...
