About a year ago (or so) there was quite a bit of discussion on this
group about the new Brandon 80mm f/6 APO refractor.

Several people received them but, except for Todd Gross' reveiw on his
web site I haven't heard any more about the unit. Are Todd's
experiences typical?

The Brandon ads have disappeared and I'm wondering why. Was the scope
not up to the price asked or expectations? Was it just a "one-shot"
deal? Is Vernonscope having trouble filling orders and not wasting
money on ads? Are they still selling it?

If someone knows about the scope or its future could you let us know
about it?

- Bill

I recieved one late spring and have been very satisifed with it. I'm not
a compendent star tester but I've been very pleased with the images it
gives. I used it last night to see the shadow transit on Jupiter (see
related posting; "Jupiter Obs. 8/16 "The Face of Jupiter"). It's very
rugged, quick to setup and I'm hoping to use it for astrophotography
piggybacked on my larger scope. As for Vernonscope, I just got a
brochure from them describing the "Brandon Master Birder" which seems to
be the same scope but outfitted with a Amici prism for right side up
viewing. The brochure says that it's and 80mm triplet f/5.6,
introductory price of $995.00. Don Yeier said in a letter that the
entire production run of the 80mm f/6 APO sold out.

Hi Bill.

I've heard from well informed sources that Vernonscope is advertising a
birdwatching version of this scope (the "Master Birder"), but at f/5.6,
instead of the f/6 astro model. I'm not aware if Vernonscope has stopped
producing the astro version, but it would seem that Don Yeier (prez. of
Vernonscope) has decided to investigate a different (and much bigger)
market for his 80mm apo.

I too would be interested to know if Vernonscope is still offering the
80mm f/6 Brandon.

Vernonscope just offered an 80mm f/5.6 scope for birders. Don
Yeier says that there is a much larger market for birders than
astros so he is making birder scopes. The f/5.6 does use an
amici roof erecting prism so that the birds to not fly
upsidedown.

I imagine that it is cheaper and easier to design a scope with an erecting
prism than to teach all the birds to fly upside down.

Don decided to at least for now, put out a birders scope with an objective
that isn't quite as color free.

In testing two sets of optics, one stunk, and the other (my current) was
exceptional..with Saturn this mornign easily taking 270x,(90x/inch!) and
showing theCassini division easily , even at this ring tilt. Plus it's
color-free. Star test is NOT perfect on either side of focus, with some
"zonal" error..but performance is up there in-focus beyond believe.

He may make these again down the road, but as in the past.. he was apparently
doing a limited production run.

Thanks! - Todd
