An on-topic question with an off-topic application --- I have Lupus, which
means I need to avoid sunlight/UV. I am also spending a lot more time in the
car lately, and it will continue. Does anyone know the transmission of UV
through a typical car windshield? Obviously it is blocked somewhat, but not
completely. Does someone know how much?

Thanks

Chuck Taylor

Hi Chuck--I am told that windshield glass blocks about 85% of the Sun's UV
radiation. Side windows block about 50% of the UV.

Chuck,
I read somewhere once, that regular glass (not those so-called plastic
eyeglasses)....in fact all glass, stops all UV light cold...completely.
That's why if your arm while you are driving is getting sun-burned,
simply roll up the driver's window. (but glass is transparent to
Infrared radiation....heat in other words.)
I've also read where even a thin sheet of paper, and thin clothing,
will stop all UV radiation completely.
(there is no need to get your house window glass coated with a
'special material' to stop UV light)...the glass itself stops all
UV completely...it's basically a scam, this special coating business.
(I could be wrong, but I don't think so). It's some plastics that
do not stop UV radiation....which some eyeglasses are made of.
Clear Skies,
Tom W.
