Someone has offered me a Celestron C4.5 for 200$ (US). The scope itself is
practically brand new (it's been used half a dozen times in two years) and
comes with two super-plossl eyepieces in addition to the one that came with
the scope.
Being a newbie with astronomy (at least, the tangible side, I've always
followed the astronomy scene book/magazine wise), I'd like to know a few
things:
1) Is this a good price?
2) Should I bring it to a telescope shop for "maintenance"?
3) Any warnings about this particular scope?

Yes indeed.

No.

No.

If someone wants to sell you a practically new 4.5 by Celestron for
$200.00, snap it up. They retail for about 595.00. Catalogues sell them
cheaper, but nowhere near 200.00.
It's a good scope. perfect for beginners, or actually anyone with an
interest in astronomy. But you can't use it during the day as a spotting
scope (not that you'd want to of course, but you can't if you wanted to.)

I had a young couple from Poland stay with me this summer and they
purchased a C-4.5 with one eyepiece, no polar align scope for $150 (US).
I felt it was a bargian. They then added eyepieces, because it is
imposible to get 1-1/4 inch eyepieces in Poland. The extra eyepieces were
gifts given to them. I have never seen a man so happy entering the
airport to return home carring a telescope optical tube in his arms as
though it were a baby and worth its weight in gold. The other parts were
carried in thir suit cases.
I also owned one as my first scope and was very happy with it. A barlow
is a big help.

Remember amateur astronomers:
"keep looking for the next Universe"
I'd like to thank all those who replied either here or thru e-mail for the
advice. I got my friend to let me try it out first to see how I like it and
simply pointed it at the moon. Having never looked thru a telescope
eyepiece before, I was amazed at the incredible view I was getting.
Basically, I'm getting the 'scope, the 25mm Celestron ortho that came for
it, two meade series 4000 super plossls (9.7mm and a 15mm) with a meade 2x
Barlow. 200$ seems like a very good price to me.
Thanks again! :-)

The price? GRAB IT!! The mount alone is probably worth that! I have, for
example, mounted my 6" Newt OTA onto the mount without problems.
