Hello,

I just received the Telrad finder I ordered in the mail. I
plan on mounting it on an 8" Celestron Dob. I'm not too
enamored of the idea of using the sticky tape stuff that
is already pre-installed on the Telrad mount - I'm a little
nervous that I'll stick the thing on there, and find out the
Telrad is not properly aimed.

Soooo, if anyone would like pass along their do's and don'ts
for mounting a Telrad, I'd be very grateful. Thanks!

John

Hi John
Just take the mount and set it on the tube where you want the Telrad
to be (you might want to "dry fit" it with string to be sure it is where
you want it). Then use a pencil and mark the edge of the mount on the
tube. Remove the string, peel of the tape backing and stick the mount
on. Then all that is left to do is point the scope at a tall tree or
telephone pole and use the three alignment screws on the back of the
Telrad to make the "bullseye" center on the same object.
Have fun.

Sean (and everyone else who responded):

Thanks very much for the advice. I will use string and take a
"dry" run on it tomorrow, then use the screws to line it up.
I didn't realize (duh) that's what they were for. Thanks again,

John

I have a Telrad at my 6" f/10 INTES Mak, and I tried several places
on the tube before I found the optimal position. The Telrad may
conflict with other accessory like piggy back mount or finder scope.
So I recommend to use rubber band or adhesive tpae for awhile, at least
for half a year. If you *really* know where to mount it you can use
the delivered adhesive strips or good glue.

The Telrad is aligned using three knobs on its back. The range of
alignment is large.

Just don't mount it too high on the scope, if you decide to add a
solar filter or other accessories, the finder might conflict.

I ended up using two screws to mount mine to the tube. With the
tape, I kept knocking it off when I carried the tube around with
a plastic cover on it..

Don't worry. Just line up the base on the OTA with the sticky tape
backing still unpeeled, and use masking tape to mark the edge. Then peel
and stick. Works like a charm. And if you ever wish to remove it, a
little alcohol takes off the adhesive without hurting the finish of the
scope.

I stuck mine on a Celestron C8 with silicone tub sealant. It's dew
proof and you can fairly easily peel the stuff off by hand if you have
to.

Hi: I got a telrad 2 years ago and for the first year I had it
"belted" to my Meade LX200. After a year of that nonsense, I bit
the bullet and used the tape that came with the Telrad to attach
it & I should have done so sooner.
I understand that WD40 can be used to remove it if/when that day
comes. Clear Skies. LenN

I asked the same question last year when I decided to finally permanently
mount mine. I ended up using a carpenter's square to line a piece of
cardboard up and taping it in place. Then I peeled the wax paper off the
double stick tape on the mount and aligned the mount's edge with the
cardboard and set the mount in position. Once the mount was in place, set
the Telrad in the mount and adjust the alignment.

Sounds great!

Just a note, I removed a Telrad base (ruining the double sided tape)
and it came off very cleanly.

Wanting to remount the Telrad base on another scope I went to Targets
and they had this mounting tape that comes in little squares and
appears to be identical to the tape that comes on the telrad bases.
It only costs a dollar. Worked great.

With a scope like the LX200 (or any that has a slot for a finder scope),
it is very easy to mount the Telrad base onto a piece of 1/2-inch acrylic by
3/4-inch by the length of the Telrad. It can then be slipped in and out
of the finder mount very easily. I leave the Telrads base mounted on my
LX and just add/remove the finder itself. The original finder can be used
if desired. Since the top of my scope is already crowded with piggyback
mount, etc, I didnt need to clutter up and crowd even more, doing it this
way.
