My theory on the purpose of the Tower based on my personal
observations:-).

~1976 my friend and I with our girlfriends (all local RI'ers) were
riding around Newport (late night summer) on our motorcycles.

They had never seen the Tower so off we went.

When we got there the gate had accidently been left open.

The Parks Dept. opens it for Tower conferences, VIPs, grass-cutting,
etc.

We then made a startling discovery!

It's a really cool place to sit within and smoke a joint:-).

Perhaps it was really built for that purpose and we discovered it :-)?

And the modern day terms 'stoned' and 'stoner' originated from this
'Stone Tower':-)?

Now we just have to discover who these 'early stoners' were:-).

In article <eZVgt.16160$Zw....@newsfe21.iad>,
At least this hypothesis is openly based on smoking something. All the
opposing hypotheses sound as though they are, but the authors of them
don't admit the smoky origins.

In the 1949 excavation they found a Pipe!

And pottery fragments from the post-buzz Food!

Sounds like that is more than enough proof for a 'History Channel'
documentary.... 'Newport's Stoned Tower' :-).

The whole "Newport Tower" nonsense is only
slightly more kooky than Bush ordering the
9/11 terrorist attacks, or J.C. Penny being
cover operation for Reptilian alians.

There. Is. No. Mystery.

Or, I should say: There was no mystery until
a lot of time went by, and the people who
built it, who were contemporaries were all long
gone and the living memory of a common place
structure was lost. Only THEN could people
invent a mystery...

"Say, we don't know when this was built exactly,
or even it's exact purpose... ALIENS! VIKINGS!
IRISH MONKS! ROMANS!"

Why fill in the blank with the wildest, most
idiotic ideas you can think of?

Sheesh!
