Dating cave paintings

How accurate are the dates assigned to cave paintings? As I understand
it, the paintings themselves can't be dated, so how can we get
reliable dates outside of the reasoning of X happened before Y
therefore the painting is at least Y old.

The AMS technique allowed the paintings to be radiocarbon dated. There is
some debate over the actual dates at the moment, due to the lack of cross
checking done with them originally (only one lab was used at the time, the
samples are being cross checked ATM, I haven't heard what the outcome
was/is).
