In the applied arts of India iconometery, talamana, the knowledge of
the measurements and the proportions of images, has an old tradition,
not entirely different from the Greek and the Renaissance
tradition.Ever since B.Laufer's study about the Citralaksana in 1913
the subject has raised new interest among artists and scholars alike.
The Indian Buddhist Pratimalaksana, which is edited in transcription
and translated into English here, may date from the 10th century,
anyway before Atisa (died 1054) . The Tibetan translation was made by
the Tibetan Grags-pargyal-mtshan (ca. 1285-1378) and the Indian
Dharmadhara, in souther Tibet before 1322, date of Bu-ston's catalogue.
The text most probably belongs to the Mulasarvastivada tradition. The
Chinese translation is the work of the Mongolian aristocrat mGon-po
skyabs, Gongbu Chabu in Chinese ( ca. 1690-1750) , The text was brought
out in 1742 at Qianlong's court in Beijing. mGon-po skyabs translated
the Tibetan text in Chinese , and he added a commentary using Tibetan
Literature, Thge Chinese text in this volume is based on the Japanese
edition T. 1419, but the stanzas are numbered, and the commentary in
prose is separated from the main text. Illustrations have been added.
The glossaries at the end will help further more research, it is hoped.
The Chinese Translation of Sanskrit words is often very useful to know
the exact meaning of a term, in both languages
Charles Willemen obtained his Ph.D in 1971 with a study of the Chinese
Udanavarga. Studied in Japan under H. Nakamura in the University of
Tokyo in 1972. Fullbright- Hays Visiting Scholar at Harvard University,
Dept. of East Asian Languages and Civiliazation in 1974. Has taught at
many Universities in Europe and in Asia. E.g. Guest Professor : Beijing
Language and Culture University , Xi'an Jiaotong University , Banaras
Hindu University , Nava Nalanda Mahavihara, Vishvabharati University in
Shantineketan. Has published extensively about Buddhism in South and
East Asia and about Chinese Art. Member of the Belgian Royal Academy of
Sciences since 1997.

The Bimbamana (popularly called Sariputra), an eleventh century
Sanskrit silpa text on Buddhist iconometry, provides the most detailed
treatment of the uttam-dasa-tala system pertaining to standing, sedent
and recumbent Buddha images. All the available palmleaf manuscript
copies of this work (numbering over fifteen) are from Sri Lanka which
is most probably the country of its origin. Unlike the
Manjusribhasita-vastuvidyasastra, another Sri Lankan silpa text which
is boldly Mahayai in character, the Bimbamana appears to have been
composed taking into consideration the Theravadic susceptibilities of
the Sri Lankan Buddhist. This speaks for its wide popularity among the
Sinhala craftsmen up to the present day. The text has been critically
edited together with an English translation which is copiously
annotated for the benefit of the lay reader.

About the Book
The Citrakarmasastra covers the second half of the ancient Sanskrit
silpa text Vastuvidyasastra devoted to Mahayanic monastic architecture
and the art of image-modeling. The first half of the text dealing with
monastic architecture was published with an introduction and an
Englishtranslation in 1989 by Sri Satguru Publications as No. 67 of
their Bibliotheca Indo-Buddhica Series. The present volume presents a
very methodical treatment of the subjects of Buddhist iconometry,
iconography and modelling clay images for the image-house of a Buddhist
monastery. In its fifteen chapters the work discusses all aspects of
image-modelling from the selection of trees for the preparation f the
wooden image-core to the painting of the eyes, finishing touch given to
a newly made image. An image is viewed as a close limitation of the
human body. It is, therefore, endowed with all essential components of
the human body such as the skeleton, nerves, arteries and veins, flesh,
skin and complexion in the form of the image - core, astabandha glue,
clay, limestone paste and pigments. All these are dealt with in
successive chapters in fair detail. Particularly interesting are the
sections on the arrangement of statues inside the image-house,
construction of the image-core, Buddhist iconography and the rituals
connected with the eye-opening ceremony. The Citrakumasastra thus
happens to be the only comprehensive work so far discovered, which
deals with the ancient art of modeling of clay images of Buddhas and
Bodhisattvas, and together with its companion volume on monastic
architecture, claims to be the most important treatise on the ancient
Buddhist art of the Mahayana School.

About the Book
The present publication, Encyclopaedia of Indian Iconography, is
intended to focus attention on the traditional details concerning
images and their worship. The details given in these volumes are taken
entirely from the traditional texts of Agama and Silpa-sastra, like
Brhatsamhita, Manasara, Kasyapa-silpa, Isana-siva-guru-deva-paddhati,
Silpa-ratna, Padma-samhita, Hayasirsa-samhita,Vaikhanasagama and
Rupa-mandana. The entries include not only the gods and goddesses of
popular so-called Hinduism, but also the divinities of Jaina (both
Digambara and Svetambara divisions) and Buddhist (Mahayana) religions.
The deities worshipped in Nepal and Tibet are also included.
Sadhana-mala has been used for descriptions of Buddhist deities, and
Rupa-mandana for Jaina deities. Most of the entries are illustrated by
line-drawings of images in temples, monasteries, basadis and in
museums. Topics of peripheral interest (like temple-construction,
image-making worship rituals and Agama divisions) have also been
included here. The volumes follow the Sanskrit alphabetical order
(akaradi) to facilitate translation into Indian languages. The first
volume begins with the words beginning with vowels in Sanskrit
alphabet. Followed with mute consonants and the rest of the consonants
in the subsequent volumes. Among various and synonymous names of the
deties, the better known ones have been selected for entry, while
cross-references also have been indicated. Wherever necessary,
background stories for particular iconographical representations have
been given.

A.H. Francke termed Ladakh as Western Tibet. In 1905 he collected 89
inscriptions, compiled then under the title 'First Collection of
Tibet Historical Inscriptions on Rock and Stone from West Tibet.' I
got this manuscripts in 1983 and thought to do further research on it.
Francke written preface and dated the inscriptions in German language.
Therefore, till 2000, I was unable to translate the German portion in
English. However, with the German Embassy's kind co-operation the
translation work was done in the end of 2000. This year when my
publisher Sri Satguru publication was ready to publish the same. I
decided to complete this work. Since the manuscript was very old and
was even difficult to understand the collected inscriptions, Francke
also admitted this. I feel these inscriptions have historical
importance, therefore, I made all possible efforts to translate them
correctly. Francke endeavoured to arrange the inscriptions in a
systematic order since 800 A.D. to 1902. Thus this manuscript now a
historical document of scientific study. Which reflects the complete
history of Ladakh kings regine. The present book has many inscriptions
related with Buddhism and in the interest of Ladakh history I do not
feel to explain them is details. However, historical facts being
considered. I prefer to give the name of this book 'First Collection
of Tibetan Historical Inscriptions on Rock and Stone from Ladakh
Himalaya. I hope this work will be useful for teachers and students who
are interested on Ladakh studies.

Hindu Pantheon" in 1810 iconography and mythology have been important
branches of Indology. In numerous books and articles both received

During 16th century A.D. King Jamyang Namgyal invited Lama Denma Kunga
Trakpa is Ladakh, who later decided to establish a monastery according
to Drigung Kargyu pa order. King agreed and gave his full assistance.
Lama Denma selected land in Phyang village and with the help of King
Jamyang Namgyal he started construction work. Initially he faced
financial crises, so king bequeathed three regions viz., Shyang Sgamang
and Lamayuru to him. Therefore, Lamayuru monastery which was the famous
monastery in Lower Ladakh came under the direct control of Lama Denma.
Consequently all the sub gonpas which were under Lamayuru monastery
came under the supervision of Lama Denma. When the construction work of
the monastery at Phyang completed, he named the monastery 'Gaon' which
later popularly known Phyang. Thus, the Lamayuru, Atiche Skru-buchan,
Tagmachik and Hemar Gonpas followed their monastic functions according
to Drigung Kargyu pa order since 16th century A.D. This book is the
study of these five monuments.
