Using easily available sources like atlases and various books on Alexander
and his conquests, I have been unable to determine if the location of the
Sogdian Rock, besieged by Alexander's army, is precisely known, or whether
there are any remains of the city that presumably existed ca BCE 330.

The most detailed (though not necessarily accurate) maps of Alexander's
route indicate that the Sogdian Rock was located somewhere NE of the
modern towns of Karshi and Derbent, near the Pamir mountains.

Does anyone have any information on the exact location and whether there
are ruins at the site? Suggestions for additional reading are also
welcome.

I would appreciate EMail replies in addition to any postings. Thanks
