Listeros,

Archaeologists in the Cascades have found artifacts dating back 9,600
years. This is the first time that human artifacts have been found at
these upper elevations dating that far back. Small stone blades,
scrapers, projectile points and animal bones have been found. These
ancient Native Americans probably lived in woven mat and wood frame
structures or bark slab structures. They came to gather elderberries,
huckleberries and animals such as elk, beaver, bear, goats, marmots.
20,000 artifacts have been found so far. Obsidian that had to be
traded to these groups has been found among the artifacts. Most of the
artifacts have been found at Buck Lake, which has a clearly defined
timeline, since volcanic eruptions at known times have formed
sedimentary proof of the age of the artifacts. Cooking pits have been
found that were used over very long periods of time. One pit was in
use for 9,600 years.
