Empathetic Magic & Cave paintings

I heard that the stone age cave paintings of animals had somthing to do with
'Empathetic magic'. I assume that painting an animal helped the hunter catch
one.

What is 'Empathetic magic' and how was it supposed to work ? Do Australian
aborignals do the same sort of things with there cave paintings ? I know
that aboriginies paint pictures of themeselves a lot, where as cro-magnons
very rarely did. (I assume it was Cro-Magnons, not Neanderthals).

Are empathetic magics, totenism, and shamanism much the same thing ?
