I am quite new to the raising of chickens too but if I'm not mistaken the grit looks very close in size to what we had for our parakeet growing up.  It doesn't take much in the beginning so a box of parakeet type grit would last a little bit.  Along the same lines anyone know when you should start them on a separate container of grit?  I have some 4 week old White Jersey Giants that seem to be craving the stuff.

Regarding the other questions I am not exactly sure.

At http://www.feathersite.com/Poultry/BRKPoultryPage.html they have pictures of many of the adult birds as well as the chicks they may give you some ideas as to what you have.  Hope this helps.

Good Luck.

Hi!  I have just received my first ever batch of baby chicks.  They
are all doing well, but I do have a couple of questions.  When can I
start feeding them "extra" stuff, such as bread, leftovers, etc?  Is it
necessary to feed them grit if they are eating chick starter crumbles?
I haven't been able to locate any grit in my area, (the only thing the
feed store had was oyster shell, I asked for grit and they gave me that,
but I know not to give oyster shell to them until they start to lay)
what can I use as a substitute?  Also, does this group have a FAQ?  Are
there any rules against sending in pictures?  I would like to send in a
pic of my chicks so maybe someone could help me figure out what kind
they are.  LOL  (I ordered Rainbow Layers package from Murray McMurray,
which are a lot of different breeds mixed together.)

Thanks for your help.

If you go to a pet store, or a grocery store with a half decent pet
section, you will find a fine grit for birds (cockatiels and such). I
have used this as chick grit and not had any trouble. There is a small
amount of really fine oystershell in it also.

I don't start feeding mine goodies until they are eating regular feed
(not starter). I only give them very small amounts at first, no matter
how pitiful they act!
