Hello kind chicken folks,
Have hen with chicks now about 3 weeks old. I've been feeding them
medicated chick crumbles as advised by the general concensus of the
group! Thanks! Chicks are doing great! It's been such fun to watch
them change and grow. They are now starting to give each other chest
butts, like the football players do! A couple of them try to hitch a
ride on Mom's back. They may all 6 be roosters, I have no idea how to
tell at this point! Anyway, my question of the day, my other 2 hens
have been eating the med chick crumbles along with their regular layer
pellets. I have the pellets in a feeder which is too high for the chicks
to reach, so I don't think that the chicks are getting the higher
calcium feed, maybe just a tiny bit that spills. I have no way at the
moment to separate the adults from the babies. For the last few weeks
the other 2 hens have stopped laying, I think to molt, which has been
very good timing up til now. They have just started laying again and I
realize that I don't have a clue whether the eggs are safe to eat! I
couldn't say how much chick feed the hens are eating, I would have to
guess 1/2 and 1/2.
Could someone please help me out once again?
Gratefully,
Eileen

Based on everything I have read, you can eat the eggs your chickens are
laying. Unless you have an aversion to eating eggs with chemicals in
them. The medication in the chick feed isn't any worse for you than the
loads of antibiotics and medications they give to commercial egg layers.

hi Eileen!
i haven't eaten eggs from chick medicine fed hens, but i did once make a
mistake which might amuse you....
i once accidentally ate some eggs from my hens the day after i had wormed
the flock (DOH!! the packet said that i should wait 7 days after worming
befor i ate the eggs!).
i panicked, and phoned my doctor and vet. they both reassured me that i
would be ok because the hens would have digested most of the medication
and only a tiny amount would be transferred to the eggs, and joked that if
i had any worms in me, they'd be gone now!

good luck to you, and your birds. isn't it cute when the chicks try to
hitch rides on mummy's back!

best wishes,
ket

The data sheet for Amprolium gives a withdrawl time of five days for
poultry meat, but none for eggs. It's frequently used for laying hens to
control coccidiosis. Since Amprolium's been in use for over forty years,
it's hard to imagine that it has any obvious high-risk health effects.
Still, medicated feed is expensive and feeding livestock unnecessary drugs
is poor form, so switching soon would be good.

we had a similar experience years ago with our goats
when the new regulations came out concerning wormers we (and the vets )
found out that the wormer we had been using should have had a 28 day (not 7
day) exclusion and would prevent swamp fever or some such crazy thing. THis
was before we were selling the milk I hasten to add. The vets had a great
giggle at us saying we would have been well wormed the previous couple of
years and would be fine in the deepest Africa
:~) :~))

I did the same thing (almost). Killed the rooster the day after I
wormed the birds. He attacked my little girl, so we killed him and ate
him. I remembered after the fact (of course!), but nobody died or even
got sick. Felt really stupid, though.

Thanks for the advise! I'd have a hard time just tossing the eggs.
Hurricane Floyd just missed us. It was forecast to hit pretty close to my
house but veered east just in time. My chicks are housed in a chicken tractor
with 3 sides and top enclosed, I could just imagine my chick going "off to
see the wizard". I staked the thing down and tied on 3 5 gal buckets full of
water to add some weight. Turned out it was all for nothing this time!

Eileen, that water bucket idea is a great one!
We here in Montana frequently get strong winds, gusting up to 74 MPH,
butgenerally aroun 56MPH, either way, heretofore, I have been braving the wind
,and shutting my ducks up in the shed (especially the day we had a tornado
bearing down on us).
But NEXT year, we will have MANY pens, and I was wondering how i would deal
with the winds.
Thank you SO MUCH for posting that wonderful idea!
Sincerely,
Kaliya
