I covered my tomatoes with tulle from the fabric store today after discovering that I had tomato hornworms. They are prehistoric looking and huge (about 5 inches). They can destroy a tomato crop in a day. Look for light green caterpillars on the underside of leaves. See this youtube for more: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gk2PYeRvmWI Place in a cup of soapy water to get rid of. Also, remove or crush white or brown eggs found on the underside of leaves. To deter hornworms, plant the following near your tomatoes: borage, chives, marigolds, dill, nasturtium, basil, calendula, carrots, peppers, sage, onions, garlic, leaf lettuce.I also noticed that the tomato hornworm attacked the potato and sunflower leaves as well. The adult is a brown spotted moth. Good luck.
