Principal's
Message
A few notes during a busy time of the
school year:
- During the week of May 6,
grades 2-8 will be participating in state
STAR testing. As we have
done in past years, we ask that parents avoid
scheduling any appointments for their children
that week, as we want to avoid interruptions and
allow our students to take the tests with their
class. Thank you in advance for helping with
this.
- By the way, if you are interested
in seeing some sample STAR test
questions, you can click here. Parents often
appreciate knowing the kind of items on which
their children will be tested.
-This coming
Friday, our PTSA will hold its first-ever
Poetry Cafe on campus at 6:30
p.m. The evening also will include a PTSA
general membership meeting. Hope to see you
then!
Have a great week!

Principal

Busy Day
in the Garden This past Friday was a busy day in
the school garden. With Garden
Education Manager Mrs. Brand supervising, students
harvested, cleaned, and bagged 18 heads of Romaine
lettuce, and they worked in teams to water the fruit
trees. Shown in top photo are students as they
water a fruit tree. At right is a wiggly visitor
who actually plays a helpful role in the
garden! | |

School
News
Congratulations to fourth grader Aileen Espinoza,
fifth grader Leticia Rubalcaba, and sixth grader Liana
Clark! These three students represented OAK-8 in the
Masonic Spelling Bees for their respective
grade levels this past week. All three students did very
well and enjoyed the experience.
If your child in
grades 5-8 enjoys volleyball, you may want to consider sending
him/her to the Orcutt Youth Volleyball Camp
June 17-28 in the Lakeview Gym. All proceeds benefit the
Orcutt Academy High School girls' volleyball program.
For more information, please click here.
Reminder re cafeteria
meals: For the remainder of this year, our new web
based Mealtime lunch account system does not have the ability
to automatically transfer money between
siblings. Cashiers know most siblings,
and will try to be vigilant about manually transferring money
between accounts, but if a child gets a low balance warning,
please have the student remind the cashier to check their
sibling's account. Remember, any parent can see their
child's account and set up a low balance email alert by going
to mymealtime.com. If you need to set
up the online viewing, please phone 938-8926 to get the
student's permanent ID number.
Reminder
for sixth-grade parents: All students
entering seventh grade this fall are required by law to submit
proof of an adolescent whooping cough booster immunization
called "Tdap". This new school immunization law affects all
students in public and private schools and students who have
not received the booster by the first day of school will not
be allowed to attend until they do. Pertussis is a very
contagious respiratory disease that can be severe and last for
months. The immunity received from either early childhood
immunization or pertussis disease wears off over time, leaving
older students and adults susceptible again to pertussis.
Immunization with Tdap can protect students, schools and
communities against pertussis. For more information, please
contact District Nurse Robyn Turner at
938-8593.
The OAK-8 PTSA still has Discount
Cards available for sale. The cards are valid
until December of this year. To purchase a card, please
see Reyes in the office.
The OAK-8 PTSA
invites parents to join its Facebook
page. To access the page, please click here.
Our PTSA is
encouraging parents and families to save Box Tops for
Education. Box Tops can earn 10 cents or more apiece
for our PTSA. If you would like to contribute Box Tops,
please bring them to the office. For a complete list of
Box Tops for Education products, please click here.

OCAF Needs
Members!
The
Orcutt Children's Arts Foundation will be
holding a Membership Drive. Please help
us reach our goal so we can keep the arts in the Orcutt Union
School District.
Look for a new thermometer to go up at
your school site. Each thermometer has been painted by
an Orcutt Union School District student and will track the
amount of membership dollars raised at that school. Once
a school site hits its goal, OCAF will donate money either for
a travelling performance or art supplies. (The school will
decide!)
The Orcutt Children's Arts Foundation has been
providing and supporting arts education in the Orcutt Union
School District for over 10 years. During that time, OCAF has
donated over $600,000 to the Orcutt Union School District,
which has paid for the Artist-in-Residence program (eight
professional arts lessons per year for OAK-8), PCPA field
trips, special arts assemblies, and much more!
You can
join OCAF online at www.ocafonline.com or look for membership forms
on the thermometer at your
school. | | |
